Are bloggers journalists? Great question. It depends on how you like your news. Inverted pyramid with a slew of sources or a first-person narrative? Updated-by-the-minute or an after-the-fact-analysis? Blog posts usually fall into the latter categories — first-person narratives with a focus on analysis. Like this. Or this. Some might say bloggers have become the new “fourth estate” by taking up the slack for a faltering media, or even calling out traditional journalists for failing to do their job well. Sure, blogging is often more haphazard and less polished than traditional media, but just about any blogger can be published — making the humongous-and-growing blogosphere one of the most democratic forms of journalism ever to exist. (But yes, we know: Veracity can vary. We recommend keeping this handy little checklist in mind whenever you want to know “can I trust this?”)
