Flickr has an open Application Programming Interface (API for short).
This means that anyone can write their own program to present public Flickr data (like photos, video, tags, profiles or groups) in new and different ways. There's a long list of API methods available to you to work with, and we love it when this happens, so... go forth and play!

Some of fd's Toys fd's Flickr Toys
by fd

fd (aka John Watson) is the epitome of the Flickr API hacker. He's made more bits and pieces than we can poke sticks at, and all of them are either fun toys for playing with photos or extremely useful tools that we haven't had time to build yet. Go, fd!

by Yahoo! Travel

Trip Planner is a website that lets you build a travel itinerary with your hotel, nearby restaurants, attractions, maps, driving directions and more! When you return home, create a photo set of your trip on Flickr then show them off as part of your trip plan.

by System One Labs

A lovely experiment, retrievr lets you search and explore in a selection of Flickr images by drawing a rough sketch and then seeing which of our interesting photos come up as a match. Beware! You will spend hours poring over the stunning (and sometimes unexpected) results.

Flickr Graph by Marcos Weskamp

Flickr GraphFlickr Graph is a Flash-based application built on the Flickr API that creates a visualization of social relationships in Flickr. Start by entering your Flickr username or email address; double click to see a view with recent photos and frequently used tags; surf around friend by friend to see their photos too.

Mappr, by Stamen Design

MapprMappr, built by our many friends at Stamen Design makes it possible to map photos with geographic location tags. You can see, for example, flowers or sunsets located on the map, zoom into particular states to see their most recent photos, or see the map of photos from a road trip. The Mappr team has created a group on Flickr too.

Flickr Color Picker Flickr Color Picker by JBum

Using images from the Color Fields group on Flickr, JBum has created a beautiful and efficient Experimental Color Picker. Just click on a color, use the slider to adjust lightness and darkness, and it will show you photos with that color.

Anyone is free to write software to do cool stuff with available Flickr data via our API. Here's how to get started:

  1. Read the Flickr documentation
  2. Subscribe to API mailing list
  3. Join the API group on Flickr
  4. Apply for an API Key

Read the Fine Print

Flickr services are experimental and are currently offered to outside developers on an ad hoc basis with no guarantee of uptime or availability of continued service. We reserve the right to disable access to external applications at any time.

We are currently evaluating the issues and results that arise from making these services available and creating policies for our full public release.

There are a few worker bees around who are keeping up with all the cool stuff that people are building on the Flickr API. Here are 2 good ones we've found:

Also, you might want to have a peek at the Yahoo! Developer Network gallery to see what people are building on the Flickr API.
