Time for a humanist school?
In our new issue, which goes on sale now in over 1,300 UK stores (see our distribution list for your nearest stockist), Francis Beckett outlines his proposal for Britain's first avowedly atheist and humanist academy. He was sceptical about the idea himself until recently, but now he thinks it could actually become a reality, and he wants to hear from others who would be interested in getting involved (contact details are in the article).
This is an issue that divides opinion among humanists, and to put the case for the opposition we have a column by Rabbi Jonathan Romain, chair of the Accord Coalition, who argues that establishing an atheist academy would represent an endorsement of the current system, which encourages religious segregation in education.
Read both articles, then let us know whether you agree or disagree with the idea of a humanist school (or even whether you'd like to get involved in starting one). There's also a poll where you can register your view.
9 Lessons and Carols for Godless People at the Bloomsbury Theatre is now sold out (returns only).
