ADL asserts Gen. Petraeus ‘erred’ in his recent congressional testimony.

In his recent testimony (pdf) before the Senate Armed Services Committee, CENTCOM chief Gen. David Petraeus stated that “insufficient progress toward a comprehensive Middle East peace” is among the “issues that serve as major drivers of instability, inter-state tensions, and conflict.” Today, the Anti-Defamation League released a statement accusing Gen. Petraeus of error:

petraeusThe assumptions Gen. Petraeus presented to the Senate Armed Services Committee wrongly attribute “insufficient progress” in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and “a perception of U.S. favoritism for Israel” as significantly impeding the U.S. military mission in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan and in dealing with the Iranian influences in the region. It is that much more of a concern to hear this coming from such a great American patriot and hero.

The General’s assertions lead to the illusory conclusion that if only there was a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the U.S. could successfully complete its mission in the region.

Gen. Petraeus has simply erred in linking the challenges faced by the U.S. and coalition forces in the region to a solution of the Israeli-Arab conflict, and blaming extremist activities on the absence of peace and the perceived U.S. favoritism for Israel. This linkage is dangerous and counterproductive.

Whenever the Israeli-Arab conflict is made a focal point, Israel comes to be seen as the problem. If only Israel would stop settlements, if only Israel would talk with Hamas, if only Israel would make concessions on refugees, if only it would share Jerusalem, everything in the region would then fall into line.

This is a clear misrepresentation of what Gen. Petraeus said. Petraeus offered his professional military opinion — shared by many others, including the 2006 Iraq Study Group — that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a key driver of instability in the Middle East, and that working toward a resolution to the conflict is an essential U.S. national security interest. The ADL offered no facts to dispute this conclusion.

Amazing how much the party of Israel first, no matter what, is supported by people that are busting a blood vessel over an extention of unemployment benefits.

They don’t mind sending BILLIONS and sacrificing the security of the United States to help out the welfare state of Israel, but they lose their mind over some kid getting fed with food stamps.

    Total morons. Typical right wingers.

It would be very easy to get a peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinians. Cut of aid to both sides until they work out their differences. It would take about 3-5 years in my estimation, but eventually they would both be forced to settle their differences.

Israel did not start the Iraq war or the Afghanistan war. If you say that the 9-11 terrorist attacks were a reaction to the presense of Israel and US support to Israel, they you are taking the terrorists word for their motivation. So I’m running away from the Census form I recieved in the mail, right, and since the Earth is flat, I’m smart enough to run in place; doing otherwise would have seen me fall off the cliff of Earth. So the mailman catches up with me and I’m thinkin, “I gave it my all, time to give my soul to big guvmint”. So I open the form, and its like ten of the easiest, least intrusive questions you’ll ever answer. What is your name..race..number of occupants..etc. So I’m about to mail the thing back..however, the ease of those questions doesn’t abolish my stupidity. I’m thinking about mailing my form to Michelle Bachmann, where she’ll probably sell the basic info to a junk mail distributor and give the proceeds to the church of blah-d.

  54. Wiz says:

There are a number of reasons why we are in the difficulty in the middle east, some of it can be attributed to support to Israel in part. But lets not forget that an underlying reason for both wars in Iraq is to protect oil resources, and the terrorists were motivated by that as well as any US support to Israel. Which brings us to the main point, the US will never walk away from Israel or force Israel to do something they do not want to do. No US administration or Congress would survive reelection. Also if the US did walk away, Israel has its own defense industry, and enough resources to get what they need, no matter what the US does.

Okay. The US could cut off their energy imports (Israel relies on external imports for meeting most of its energy needs) as well as their military imports I think you could seriously force their hand (for lack of a better way of putting it).

That’s it in a nutshell. Israel is much different that most countries that we use sanctions on. They have a representative democracy, and once the people feel the heat, they have the ability to make changes to their government.

As it stands, there is no reason for them to make any changes to their government.

Agreed except for one thing, they should boot Benjamin Netanyahu out…the guy is a warmonger.

Well, I would go one step further and say he is a war criminal. There are several that should be standing trial at The Hague.

It seems like every nation the US has ever been involved with either has its share of war criminals because of we put them in power or because we took someone out of power and that destabilized the region giving rise to the war criminals.

And of course there are cases like Blair and the Bush gang. I bet they’ll die of natural causes before they see the inside of a court-room let alone a prison cell.

If you are interested, research the real underlining cause of the conflict. You will find that it is WATER. Israel needs more and more, and the only place they can get it is in Palestinian areas. Read about how Israel divides water between the Palestinians and Israelis in the occupied territories.

Thanks lefty..I didn’t know that, but it makes sense considering Israel is a desert country..They’ve been having water conservation programs ( I learned about them in one of my science classes) for a while now, and they’ve been experimenting with irrigating plants with seawater, which I thought was kind of cool..But I thought that they solved the water problem with desalination plants.. I guess I was wrong..

The problem with the US is we don’t understand that many parts of the world are not ready for / do not want democracy.

After WWII, the us pretty much rebuilt Europe. The difference there was the population had democratic histories, the population was very well educated, and more importantly, we understood the cultures involved.

Even in Japan, which was much harder, we were still able to change form of government because the population was educated, and had the will to make changes to prevent what happened to them in WWII.

When we go into the Middle East, we have little to no understanding of their cultures, many of the people are poorly educated, and if they are it is a religious education (think what life would be like in the US if the majority of people were educated by their local church).

We need to change for going in and dictating, to going in an asking how we can help. Encouraging change instead of forcing it at the point of a gun.

And most important: WE NEED TO CHANGE OUR ENERGY POLICY SO WE ARE NOT DEPENDENT ON THE COUNTRIES OF THE MIDDLE EAST FOR OUR OIL AND ENERGY!

Spoiled rich kid “bin Laden” showed his daddy who is boss by going after ultra-spoiled rich kid “GW Bush”.

Total bill should be at least 3 times the cost of putting the military in the field. If my memory is correct (I’m watching KU play in the NCAA tournament and don’t want to do the research) I think it costs the US 5 – 10 billion dollars to keep our army in South Korea. No, I think Israel has a right to exist, but the DO NOT have the right to kill Palistanians in the occupied territories, they DO NOT have the right to put settlements in the occupied territories, they DO NOT have the right to steal the resources in the occupied territories.

I don’t know what fundie kool-aid is, but thanks for the tip. Also, Charles Wesley was a hymn write, I’m not sure he would have had an opionion about Israel in the 1700’s, but perhaps you know more about him than I do (and no my screen name is not after Charles Wesley). Peace will more swiftly come to this conflict when the Muslim nations surrounding Israel actually do something proactive concerning the Palestinians.

Noo I was thinking that wesley, an important figure in the methodist church would have something to say about peace and the cessation of hositlities(sp?) between both sides..I can see we have two different ideas of peace here.. You seem to think it will come at the point of a gun (or in this case, a missle), and I want it to come from diplomacy, aid, development, etc..

That is the only way that a lasting peace will happen. Any time you force peace at the point of a gun, you will end up with simmering hatred. Look at what is happening in the ME right now.

Which is war, war, war, war, and more war.

You are ignoring totally what Israel has been doing to the Palestinians the last 64 years since Israel was created on Palestinians land in 1948 and you are trying to wash it out by keep using the words ‘antisemitism’ as justification.
Did you check to see if the Palestinians are more Semites than the Ashkenazim (German in Hebrew) who represent the majority of Jews who are originally Khazaris.
I say this because this seems to be the only defence you have to justify Israel’s butchery of Palestinians, keep repeating the ‘antisemitism’ card.

I am fully aware of what a Semite is, but thank you for the condescension, I don’t know where I would be without it. You keep saying it was Palestinians’ land, but why then were they so un-inclined to so vehemently claim it before the creation of the Jewish state in ‘48? Furthermore, this is land that was historically theirs and after 70 AD they have been increasingly forced out. First by the Romans, then the Arabs, then the Ottomans. We can play a history game all night long, but unfortunately I am off to bed. The bottom line is, the Jews were a displaced people after WWII, Europe wasn’t going to take them, Russia wasn’t willing, and neither were we, so they had to be put somewhere. I can think of no place better than where they began, and funny enough, so did President Harry Truman. Now, since they have been their they have had to continue the same horrific torment and hatred that they did during the Holocaust. Fortunately now they have the protection of nationhood, and they should by no means roll over again to anti-Jewish hate that their people have dealt with for millenniums. So yeah, if this means that they are zealous in claiming what is rightfully theirs and just as determined to defend it, then more power to them.

Do you honestly believe that the Jews don’t want peace, are you really serious? Of course they do, and so does every one else, but they have the first priority of defending their population.

Also, it’s John Wesley that the screen name is after, and I’m not too sure I am too far off where he would be on this. The current United Methodist Church does not resemble Wesley’s theology all that closely.

Because they didn’t have a military that could stand up to the US they should have been pushed off their land? You just aren’t getting what we are saying. Actually look at what Israel is doing to the Palestinians, put yourself in their position for a bit.

Israel is committing “crimes against humanity” everyday, and it’s only because the US is complicit in the acts that they aren’t facing any real sanctions. If Israel was an African or South American country, their leaders would be on trial at The Hague.
