January 11, 2009 marked seven years since the first detainees were brought to the prison at Guantánamo Bay. Gitmo has become a symbol for the Bush administration’s worst excesses—including indefinite detention, torture, and unconstitutional military commissions. And Guantánamo is only one part of what has been an eight-year campaign against the Constitution. Inside the U.S., we have seen warrantless wiretapping, indiscriminate arrests of immigrants, and unconscionable profiling of minorities. But with a new administration, we have an opportunity to end these policies. President Obama has begun this restoration by taking bold stances on Gitmo, torture and illegal detention and pledging to "restore our moral leadership in the world". Help us convey to President Obama and his administration how important it is that they fulfill this pledge.

Safe and Free
There has never been a more urgent need to preserve fundamental privacy protections and our system of checks and balances than the need we face today, as illegal government spying, provisions of the Patriot Act and government-sponsored torture programs transcend the bounds of law and our most treasured values in the name of national security.

Illegal Surveillance
Mass, dragnet surveillance has become one of the U.S. government’s principal strategies for protecting national security. The ACLU has fought several legal and legislative battles to protect the rights of privacy and free speech, and is demanding that the new administration and Congress restore the liberties we’ve lost over the past eight years.
