The AU Special Envoy for the Darfur Talks and Chief Mediator, Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim expressed appreciation of the African Union to the Government of The Netherlands for the support the latter has been providing to the continental organization in its efforts to bring about peace in Darfur. The Special Envoy made this statement today, Tuesday 4 October 2005, during the special plenary meeting organized, on the occasion of the visit of Dr. Jan Peter Balkenende, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of The Netherlands, who seized the opportunity to address the participants to the Sixth Round of the Inter-Sudanese Peace Talks on Darfur. .more

The AU Special Envoy for the Darfur Talks and Chief Mediator, Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim, formally opened today, Monday, 3 October 2005, a Plenary meeting, which marked the commencement of the discussions on the substantive issues. The Plenary Session, which was attended by all the Sudanese Parties, the Chadian Co-Mediation, the Facilitators and the International Partners, was followed at 16:00 hours by the first meeting of the Commission on Power Sharing, which will have Amb. The Pledging Conference on financial and logistical support for the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) convened, on 26 May 2005, by the African Union (AU) at its Headquarters, in Addis Ababa, ended successfully, with pledges from AU partners, as well as some AU Member States totaling 291,585,000.00 USD. This amount is a first estimate of financial pledges, without the contributions in kind, which are being tallied. more

The Conference will be co-chaired by the Chairperson of the AU Commission and the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
