Haiti aid mission uses lessons of war   

           

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — This is not war, this overwhelming humanitarian effort. But after eight years of dealing with counterinsurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan, the lessons learned there — getting into the communities to understand the people’s needs — apply here to the job of distributing food and water and providing medical help.

Trickle of Aid Reaches Destitute Haitian Quake Survivors

U.S. officials say a trickle of international aid is reaching earthquake survivors in Haiti, but humanitarian needs far outpace delivery capabilities due to impassable roads, limited airlift capacity, and other challenges in the wake of last week's catastrophe.  Meanwhile, anger and lawlessness have escalated in Port-au-Prince and surrounding communities, as desperation grows.   more.....

Remains of U.S. Paratrooper Found in Afghanistan
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The remains of a U.S. paratrooper reported missing since early this month in western Afghanistan was recovered yesterday, military officials said.

The body of Army Sgt. Brandon Islip was recovered from the Bala Murgahab River in Badghis province after a local Afghan resident provided information on his whereabouts, officials said.

Iraqi Commandos, US Paratroopers Practice for Partnered Air-assault Operations
