Spammers and scammers sometimes create phony emails that look like they’re from Facebook. These emails can be very convincing. Even the “From:” field can be spoofed to include “Facebook” or “The Facebook Team.”

These emails might look like:
  • Notifications about friend requests, messages, events, photos, and videos
  • False accusations that you are abusing the site
  • Warnings that something will happen to your account if you don't update it or take another immediate action

If an email looks strange, don’t click any of the links in it or open any attachments. Note that Facebook will never send you a password as an attachment.

If you think you received a fake Facebook email, let us know.

You received this email because a Facebook member is inviting you to join Facebook. Facebook allows members to send invites to their contacts by entering an email address or by uploading their contacts.

If you're already registered for Facebook, your friend may have submitted an email address of yours that is not currently linked to your Facebook account. If you'd like to, you can add this email address to your existing Facebook account to ensure that you won't get Facebook invites sent to you in the future.

If you are not already a Facebook member and would like to join, you can use this email to start the registration process.

If you wish to no longer receive invites from your friends, you can use the unsubscribe link in the footer of the email.

If you are receiving emails from Facebook, it’s because your friends, or other Facebook users who may know you, have sent you invitations to join the site. People with Facebook accounts can import their contacts to Facebook and send email invitations to those friends. The emails may include the names of other people, besides the person who sent the invite, who have imported your email address to Facebook already or previously sent you an invitation, or friends of the person who sent you the invitation. This helps you find potential connections on Facebook, so you can find and start sharing with them if you decide to join.

  • If you'd like to join, you can click on the link in the email to sign up for an account and start communicating with your friends.
  • If you do not wish to join Facebook or receive emails from Facebook users, you can opt out by clicking the link at the bottom of the email. When you opt out of emails, your email address won't be used for making friend suggestions, but it will remain on our server in hashed form so that we can prevent emails to you in the future.

If you requested a password reset but didn't receive your password reset email:
  1. Check the spam or junk mail folder in your email account. Sometimes these emails are misdirected.
  2. Check all of the email accounts and mobile numbers connected to your Facebook account. When you request a password reset, you'll see a list of the email addresses and mobile numbers confirmed on your account. You'll have the option to send the password reset email to some or all of these accounts. Note: For security reasons, parts of the email addresses and phone numbers will be hidden (ex: fxxxxxxk@fxxxxxxk.com, xxxxxxx5555).
  3. Try to reset your password again.
  4. If you still don't receive the email after requesting a password reset a second time, wait 24 hours and try again. We may be experiencing temporary site issues.
  5. If you’re still not receiving your password reset email after the trying the four steps above, contact your Internet Service Provider (ex: Comcast) to make sure they’re not blocking email traffic coming from Facebook.
Tip: If you try to reset your password too many times too quickly, you may be temporarily blocked from requesting a password reset. If this happens, wait 24 hours and try again.

Most likely, someone mistakenly tried to register using your email address. Do not click the link in the email. If you don’t click the link, the account will not be confirmed. An unconfirmed account can remain on the site for a maximum of three days, but it can’t be used to send messages, write on Walls (timelines), post in discussions, poke, tag friends in photos or notes, comment on content, join groups, or like pages. After three days without the email owner’s confirmation, the account will become inaccessible.

If someone created an account to impersonate or imitate you, learn more about how to report this.

Facebook sends a notification to every email address associated with an account when someone has been able to register one of the addresses on the account. This happens when a person clicks on a link sent to the email address when creating a new account, or when adding the address to an existing account.

If you still own the email address in question, you can add it back to your account by going to the "Settings" tab on the Account page and following the same process. You may want to change the password for the email address, as someone else may have been able to access it in order to confirm the contact change.

If you no longer own the address, you will not be able to add it back to your account. If you still own the email address but are unable to access it, please contact your email provider for assistance with regaining access to the address.

If you have received a Facebook reactivation email in error, it is possible that another person has attempted to log in using your email address and password. We recommend that you reset your password to further secure your account. The password you select should be unique, complex, and kept entirely to yourself. You should also make sure that any email addresses associated with your account are secure. Remember that anyone who can read your email can probably also access your Facebook account.
