Karen Magnuson, vice president/News and editor of the Rochester (NY) Democrat and Chronicle, was named a winner of the eighth annual Robert G. McGruder Awards for Diversity Leadership. The awards are given by the Freedom Forum, which administers the program, in partnership with the Associated Press Managing Editors (APME) and the American Society of News Editors (ASNE). |
The Gannett Foundation/WXIA-TV in Atlanta contributed
grants of $5,000 each to the Atlanta chapters of the Salvation Army and
the American Red Cross to help support local flood-relief efforts. In addition
to these grants, WXIA/WATL hosted a telethon for the flood victims in partnership
with the American Red Cross of Metro Atlanta to offer the community a chance
to participate as well. |

project about Christ Child House, which provides care for abused and
neglected children in the Detroit area. Coverage prompted a flood of support

The Detroit Free Press won its ninth Pulitzer
Prize for its coverage of the text message scandal that led to the resignation
and jailing of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. The Free Press won
in the "Local Reporting" category. Details here. Also, Mike Thompson of The Detroit Free Press
was nominated as a finalist in the Pulitzer editorial cartooning category.
Earlier, the Free Press won several other national awards for the Kilpatrick
coverage, including a 2008 Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) award
and a 2008 Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Journalism. |
