Sondra K — Grand Conservative Blogress Diva 2006

Congratulations to Sondra K of the blog Knowledge is Power who with 1,344 votes beat out a number of strong contenders to be the Grand Conservative Blogress Diva 2006. Pamela of Atlas Shrugs was runner-up with 1,189 votes.

Given her strong campaign, Sondra demonstrated both the qualities of a GayPatriot Diva (a strong, talented and confident woman who commands the respect of men) and those of a traditional gay diva and is well-deserving of this honor.

Joining Sondra in the court (of great conservative and libertarian blogresses) will be her runner-up as well at their competitors in this competition — Ann Althouse, Tammy Bruce, Polipundit’s Lorie Byrd, Jane Galt (Asymmetrical Information), Bridget Johnson (GOP Vixen), Carol Platt Liebau, National Review Online’s K-Lo (Kathryn Jean Lopez), Michelle Malkin, Betsy Newmark (Betsy’s Page), Debbie Schlussel, Cathy Seipp and Cathy Young.

Last Chance to Vote for Conservative Blogress Diva/Why Gay Men Like Strong Women

Posted by GayPatriotWest at 6:31 pm - December 30, 2005.
Filed under: Blogging, Mythology and the real world

Just under twenty-four hours remain to vote for your favorite conservative blogress diva. At 6 PM EST (3 PM PST) on New Year’s Eve, I’ll check the vote tally and award the blogress with the highest number of votes (at that time) the title of Grand Conservative Blogress Diva 2006. And since each of the women nominated has now received over 100 votes, all will join the Grand Diva’s court as a conservative (or libertarian) blogress diva in her own right.

And while we thought our list was comprehensive of the conservative blogress divas, we keep discovering new ones. Bear in mind that we define a diva differently than do most gay men. For us, a diva is a strong, confident and talented woman who commands the respect of men. Yet, as the campaign has shown, some of the nominees have shown a quality which defines the more “traditional” diva — a strong woman who loves attention. It seems that some of the top vote-getters delight in promoting themselves. It’s too bad we can’t name them all Grand Conservative Blogress Diva.

As we honor these divas, let me draw you attention to other great blogresses on the right — The Anchoress, Baldilocks and Little Miss Attila. And be sure to check out this year’s nominees: Ann Althouse, Tammy Bruce, Polipundit’s Lorie Byrd, Jane Galt (Asymmetrical Information), Bridget Johnson (GOP Vixen), Sondra K (Knowledge is Power), Carol Platt Liebau, National Review Online’s K-Lo (Kathryn Jean Lopez), Michelle Malkin, Betsy Newmark (Betsy’s Page), Pamela of Atlas Shrugs, Debbie Schlussel, Cathy Seipp and Cathy Young.

Because we gay men respect strong women such as these, we should also consider why it is that gay men look up to and often befriend such forceful women. Indeed, I may be writing my Ph. D. dissertation on such a topic, looking at how the Greek goddess Athena serves to bring men together. It is she who effects the reconciliation between Odysseus and his son Telemachus in The Odyssey. And, in perhaps my favorite classical play, AeschylusThe Eumenides, this feminine representation of wisdom says, “but for marriage, I am always for the male.

Perhaps, we so revere strong women because we, who pursue romantic relationships with other men, need a means to let the feminine into our lives. It often seems that the gay men with the great problems, emotional, sexual and whatnot are those least in touch with the feminine, both in terms of their relationships with others and their understanding of themselves.

As you cast your vote for grand conservative blogress diva, please join me in pondering why it is that so many gay men honor strong and confident women.

George Bush Hates Old People!

Posted by GayPatriot at 2:17 pm - December 30, 2005.

Remember how thousands of poor people were dying under the bridges as the hysterical Shepard Smith and Anderson Cooper were reporting live during the Katrina aftermath in New Orleans? Remember how Kanye West spouted out the LibDem talking points during a television tribute concert declaring, “George Bush hates black people!” ?

Well, as has been the case in the Katrina situation and most other major events that the MSM has covered lately… the pre-event assumptions of the liberal reporters and editors have been crushed by the facts yet again.

In fact, we now know that George Bush must hate OLD people!

Katrina affected elderly the most; Analysis: Assumptions on victims were incorrect – Knight Ridder

Four months after Hurricane Katrina, analyses of data suggest that some widely reported assumptions about the storm’s victims were incorrect.

For example, a comparison of locations where 874 bodies were recovered with U.S. census tract data indicates that the victims weren’t disproportionately poor. Another database of 486 Katrina victims from Orleans and St. Bernard parishes, compiled by Knight Ridder, suggests they also weren’t disproportionately African American.

Both sets of data are incomplete; Louisiana state officials have released no comprehensive list of the dead. Still, they provide the most comprehensive information available to date about who paid the ultimate price in the storm.

The one group that was disproportionately affected by the storm appears to have been older adults. People 60 and older account for only about 15 percent of the population in the New Orleans area, but the Knight Ridder database found that 74 percent of the dead were 60 or older. Nearly half were older than 75. Many of those were at nursing homes and hospitals, where nearly 20 percent of the victims were recovered.

Now that is just shocking! After all, the elderly are never warned when a cold snap or heat wave comes. And they are never a special risk group when the flu breaks out. Come on…. we all know that the elderly are always disproportionately impacted by a disaster. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist… or a New York Times reporter…. to figure that out.

Fact is we need more objective journalists in positions of power at the TV networks and our major papers. Their biases are clouding their judgements and creating “fact” in the minds of the American public that are outright lies.

John Adams & the Gipper — Conservative Revolutionaries

Posted by GayPatriotWest at 4:30 am - December 30, 2005.
Filed under: American History, Great Americans, Ronald Reagan

Perhaps it was seeing 1776* in fourth grade that has made me such a fan of John Adams. I was delighted when David McCullough’s biography of this great man quickly climbed to the top of the bestseller charts when it was released in 2001. (I highly recommend the book.)

Yesterday, while listening to the Barnes & Noble “Portable Professor course,” Patriots: Brotherhood of the American Revolution, I heard Professor Joseph J. Ellis (author of Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation) describe the man who would become America’s second president as a revolutionary in a conservative sense. I like that description of this great patriot — conservative revolutionary.

Such a term shows how one of Adams’ greatest successors as president was following in his footsteps when he launched what others called the Reagan Revolution upon his election in 1980. Ronald Reagan, our nation’s fortieth president, just his Eighteenth Century predecessor, was also a conservative revolutionary. And just like many other proud Americans, we gay patriots look to these great men for inspiration.

Chicago Tribune: Iraq War Was Justified

Posted by GayPatriot at 6:00 pm - December 29, 2005.

There is a lot of buzz on the cable news shows today about this Editorial from yesterday’s Chicago Tribune (hat tip – Rhymes with Right)

Judging the case for war – Chicago Tribune main editorial, December 28, 2005

On Nov. 20, the Tribune began an inquest: We set out to assess the Bush administration’s arguments for war in Iraq. We have weighed each of those nine arguments against the findings of subsequent official investigations by the 9/11 Commission, the Senate Intelligence Committee and others. We predicted that this exercise would distress the smug and self-assured–those who have unquestioningly supported, or opposed, this war.

< ...>

After reassessing the administration’s nine arguments for war, we do not see the conspiracy to mislead that many critics allege. Example: The accusation that Bush lied about Saddam Hussein’s weapons programs overlooks years of global intelligence warnings that, by February 2003, had convinced even French President Jacques Chirac of “the probable possession of weapons of mass destruction by an uncontrollable country, Iraq.” We also know that, as early as 1997, U.S. intel agencies began repeatedly warning the Clinton White House that Iraq, with fissile material from a foreign source, could have a crude nuclear bomb within a year.

Seventeen days before the war, this page reluctantly urged the president to launch it. We said that every earnest tool of diplomacy with Iraq had failed to improve the world’s security, stop the butchery–or rationalize years of UN inaction. We contended that Saddam Hussein, not George W. Bush, had demanded this conflict.

Many people of patriotism and integrity disagreed with us and still do. But the totality of what we know now–what this matrix chronicles– affirms for us our verdict of March 2, 2003. We hope these editorials help Tribune readers assess theirs.

Following the editorial, the Tribune lays out the NINE arguments for war (not just one!) that the Bush Administration discussed with the American public before March 2, 2003. This is a remarkable and responsible piece of journalism — a welcome oasis in the midst of the MSM’s Bush bashing Sahara desert.

Why is Brokeback Mountain Hitting Home for So Many?

Posted by GayPatriotWest at 2:29 pm - December 29, 2005.
Filed under: Gay America, Movies, TV & Pop Culture

Four years ago, after watching Stephen Spielberg’s movie Artificial Intelligence: AI with my friend Elaine, I didn’t want to leave the theater. I was blown away by the flick and thought it was much shorter than its over two-hour running time. Bored by the same flick that “got” me, Elaine thought it was much longer. Still, given my own experience, I was certain it would do gangbusters business at the box office. I was wrong. Most moviegoers reacted to the film as did Elaine. The movie had a steep second week drop off and was considered a box office disappointment, one of the few Spielberg movies to gross under $100 million (at the domestic box office).

In loving a film that was not well loved by American audiences, I realized (yet again) how one movie (just like a book or other work of art) could move some people while leaving others cold. It seems I’m experiencing the opposite with Brokeback Mountain. While I was disappointed by the flick, nearly all my gay friends have been “blown away” by this story of unrealized love. And it’s not just my gay friends. My friend Tracy was stunned that the movie did not affect me as it had affected her. She was certain that a scene at the end would have moved me to tears as it did her. I acknowledge that such scenes would normally move me, but for some reason, that one left me cold.

Another man with whom I always agree on movies thought it was one of the best movies of the year. When I was up in San Francisco, I met a reader (and fan) of this blog who had already seen it twice, noting how the film, in some ways, paralleled his own coming out, portraying an experience for which he lacked language. He too was “blown away” by the flick. While not blown away, Malcontent “related to it strongly because it reminded me of growing up and struggling with my sexuality in a stoic, repressed ranching town.”

Because so many people I respect enjoyed the movie far more than I, I’m beginning to wonder if I missed something. Perhaps, it was just that I saw it on a hectic day — and was seeing it more because readers were curious to learn what I thought about it. Or maybe it was the hype. Or, for whatever reason, the movie just didn’t hit home for me. As I wrote a few weeks ago, I recognize “certain movies move some of us to tears while leaving others cold.

Because the movie did not blow me away as it did many of you, I invite you, our readers, to comment and share how the movie affected you — and why you think it blew you away (or why it left you cold). If you would rather share your thoughts in an e-mail, please drop me a note and let me know if I may post them. In closing, I will say that the movie did stir some things up for me and I may blog on that later. But now I want to hear your thoughts. Let me know if it stirred things up for you or if there were scenes which really hit home for you. And if you like, let me know if you think I should give the movie a second chance — and see it again.

-Dan (AKA GayPatriotWest): GayPatriotWest@aol.com

In the Addendum after the (more…), I have included the complete text of Malcontent’s remarks excerpted in the post and may add on other comments as I see fit.

Slow Blogging Week

Hey everybody. Sorry for the lack of new stuff here this week. I know Dan is with his family, and PatriotMom has been visiting us in Charlotte this week.

We visited Biltmore, the Vanderbilt mansion in Ashville, on Tuesday. I’ll try to get some of the photos we took posted later today. (We openly wondered if Anderson Cooper has a room at Biltmore?)

There are some interesting pieces of news and opinion I’ve seen in the past couple days that I’m hoping to blather about later today as well.

So this is kind of like a “blog-mark” to hold this space for a bit. But don’t forget…. the Conservative Blogress Diva contest is still going on!! It appears that as of now, supporters of Sondra K and Pamela @ Atlas Shrugs are battling for the lead.

NBC News: Holiday Season Is “Ho-hum”

Well, that’s the way Campbell Brown characterized the holiday season outlook for retailers this year during her lead story on NBC Nightly News last night.

But lo and behold…..what’s this?? (hat tip – Drudge)

Holiday retail spending up 8.7 percent – Reuters

Amazon announces best holiday season ever – Amazon press release

Maybe Campbell Brown meant the economy of New Orleans that was ruined by President Bush? Or the economy of Baghdad that was ruined by President Bush? It must have been something terrible that the President did somewhere….. but it wasn’t the USA economy which has been booming all year. But you wouldn’t know it if you watched NBC News!

Patriot Act Claims First ‘Innocent Victim’…

Posted by GayPatriot at 10:38 pm - December 25, 2005.

….in his own mind. (h/t – LittleGreenFootballs).

Federal agents’ visit was a hoax – SouthCoastToday.com

The UMass Dartmouth student who claimed to have been visited by Homeland Security agents over his request for “The Little Red Book” by Mao Zedong has admitted to making up the entire story.

The 22-year-old student tearfully admitted he made the story up to his history professor, Dr. Brian Glyn Williams, and his parents, after being confronted with the inconsistencies in his account.

Had the student stuck to his original story, it might never have been proved false.

So yet again, the only “innocent” claimed by “excesses” of the Patriot Act is victimized by his own paranoia. I’ve yet to see a real, documented case of anyone, who isn’t breaking the law or here illegally, having their “civil liberties” violated by the Patriot Act. Or wiretapping.

If you aren’t doing anything illegal, are in this country legally and aren’t calling your al-Qaeda friends overseas, you don’t have anything to fear. Except the scare tactics of Democrats.

Favorite Christmas Toy Or Gadget

I heard a funny theory on the radio this past week. I wish I’d remember which channel it was. It may have been the Tanner in the Morning program on one of our new favorite country stations, WSOC – 103.7 FM.

But in any case, the theory went that by 2pm on Christmas day, the entire family begins to “gell” around one favorite toy or favorite gadget. For example, everyone wound up playing “Trivial Pursuit” in its heyday.

Well, around the PatriotHouse today, the Magellan GPS handheld and my new Podcasting equipment are high on the list. And we may settle down to watch “March of the Penguins” shortly.

So what is “gelling” everyone together in your house so far today?

What Left-wing Moonbats and Gay-baiters Have in Common

It’s been a while since I have gotten hate e-mails. When I first started blogging, I used to receive two or three a week, usually from people who just discovered the blog and were really angry that a gay man could express a perspective different from their own — and that of the gay media/culture mainstream. It seems that when certain angry individuals hear about our blog from some left-of-center blog, they feel compelled to write in to lambaste it and attack us.

Well, shortly after such a blogger picked up our conservative blogress diva contest, I received my first piece of hate-mail in some time. So delicious was this missive that I thought I’d share the whole thing (minus the sender’s name) with you:

What the hell is wrong with you? How can you support Bush? Not only is he the worst President in the history of the US (with the possible exception of James Buchanan) who has made this country not only much less safe than it was when he took over the Presidency, nearly bankrupted our treasury and made us the pariah of global politics, but he is a man who actively works to strip you of your rights. Does the Constitutional Amendment to ban gay marriage ring any bells with you? How can you collaborate with your enemy – someone who you know full well hates you & everything you are about? You have no business insulting anyone else. I suggest you take a long, hard look in the mirror, and figure out what is wrong with yourself (and there appears to be PLENTY) before you continue impugning the patriotism of people who disagree with you. It is people like you who are literally ripping this country apart at it’s seems, and the rest of us are really getting tired of it. Clearly, America is just not that important to you. You are happy to watch our country swirl down the drain, if it means that thugs & liars like yourself and the President you so admire can redistribute tax dollars to the super-rich, rape the environment, curtail civil liberties and wage endless war. What is good for the country is of no concern to you & your ilk at all. It’s only what you, or your deranged political leaders, want. It’s all about YOU. That literally disgusts me, and you should be completely ashamed of yourself, not that you have any notion of what shame might be, judging from your reprehensible blog. In closing, if you can’t be a positive force in the Gay & Lesbian community, and help people LIKE YOURSELF to have the same rights and access to Government that straight people enjoy, then SHUT UP.

I have already taken issue with this writer in a series of e-mails. But, it’s striking how insult- and anger-filled his missive is. And such angry leftists are the ones accusing us of hatred!

Not only that. He misrepresents our views as well as conservative ideas in general. Indeed, his hate-filled screed seems little different from the anti-gay diatribes of the most extreme social conservatives. The only difference is that they’re projecting their own demons onto different targets.

Honoring a True American Pioneer on His 100th Birthday

Posted by GayPatriot at 3:29 pm - December 23, 2005.
Filed under: American History, Great Americans

When I was growing up, the name “Howard Hughes” brought media-fueled images of an old hermit, huddled naked in his room with long fingernails and billions of dollars to his name.

And that was the image I had of Howard Hughes until Martin Scorcese’s wonderful film, The Aviator, came out last year and debunked that one-dimensional portrait. Since that time I have read a couple of books and watched a couple of DVD documentaries in my determination to learn more about this true American pioneer that his peers neglected after his death, and now whom history appears to be giving his rightful rehabilitation.

Tomorrow — December 24, 2005 — marks the 100th birthday of Howard Robard Hughes, born in Humble, Texas. He was truly an American original, an engineering genius, a man with a serious mental disorder (OCD), and a man who has had a significant impact on American culture since the time he stepped foot in Hollywood in the mid-1920s. A lot is known about his womanizing, eccentric behavior and tragic last years of his life. But not enough is told to the American public about what a fascinating, driven, brilliant and important man Hughes was to our nation.

There are too many milestones in Hughes’ life to try to note all of them in this short posting. So I will try to pick out a few that I believe have had the most long-term impact on American culture, science, business and politics:

- 1927 – Began filming Hell’s Angels, the most expensive Hollywood production of the time for which Hughes assembled the largest private air force in the world.

- 1935-38 – Hughes becomes an aviation hero, eclipsing Charles Lindbergh, by first setting the fastest land-speed record, then transcontinental speed record, then the record for fastest trip around the world in 1938.

- 1943 – As director of The Outlaw, Hughes created a firestorm among Hollywood censors by featuring Jane Russell’s cleavage. He would also invent the underwire push-up bra which Russell would model for years later.

- 1946 – Nearly killed in a crash of a prototype Air Force jet. While in the hospital, Hughes invented the automatic hospital bed.

- 1946-49 – As principle shareholder of TransWorld Airlines, Hughes the first cost-effective air routes to Europe and South America from the USA.

- 1941-56 – Turns Hughes Aircraft into multi-billion dollar empire and key supplier of air defense to the United States during WWII and the early Cold War. Hughes also conceived and manufactured the “air-to-air missle” technology, considered the most important development in the defense of North America since radar was invented.

- 1966-1970 – Hughes singlehandedly wrestled control of Las Vegas casinos from the mafia bosses from the East Coast. Modern-day Las Vegas moguls, including Steve Wynn, credit Hughes with creating the Las Vegas entertainment mecca that we know and love today.

- 1972 – Many now believe that the Watergate break-in was ordered mostly due to Hughes’ hiring of former Kennedy aide Larry O’Brien who became DNC Chairman and whose office was at the infamous hotel. President Nixon had a long-standing fear of Hughes’ power throughout his presidency.

There is no doubt that Hughes should rank as one of the most important figures of the 20th Century. Unfortunately, his mental deterioration and personal issues have clouded the image that most Americans have of this giant of industry and pop culture. I would highly recommend anyone interested in knowing more of the facts about Hughes, including the most recent information about his fight with obsessive-compulsive disorder, to read the great book, “Howard Hughes – The Untold Story“.

I would like to salute Howard Hughes in advance of his 100th Birthday tomorrow. I would also like to thank Martin Scorcese and Leonardo diCaprio for turning the horrible image I had of a crazy hermit fade into a truly three-dimensional picture of a fascinating American hero.

Mr. President — Arrest Harry Reid For Treason

Posted by GayPatriot at 2:30 pm - December 23, 2005.
Filed under: Liberals, War On Terror

All this talk about impeaching Bush for protecting America by eavesdropping on al-Qaeda operative phone calls has gotten me thinking.

On Friday, December 16th, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid proudly professed before a cheering crowd of SurrenderCrats, “Think of what happened twenty minutes ago in the Unites States Senate …we killed the Patriot Act.”

During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln (the one Republican President that LibDems seem to like) made this statement: “Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled or hanged.”

I completely agree with President Lincoln. Therefore I urge President Bush to arrest Senator Reid for treason and put him into the court system that the LibDems so love.

Apparently we have to fight this War On America not only against al-Qaeda abroad, but also al-Qaeda sympathizing Democrats (the same party that coddled Communism) at home.
