Steve Harvey Radio Show Coming To TV

NEW YORK — Comic Steve Harvey is bringing his morning radio show to television.

The simulcast will begin this fall on Centric, the spinoff network to BET that appeals to older viewers.

BET also said Wednesday that Academy Award winner Mo'Nique will return for a second season of late-night comedy. BET says it will also take on "The Game," a series that used to air on the CW network and in syndication, about women following a fictitious football team.

The network also plans to start a romantic comedy called "Let's Stay Together."

John King Ratings: 'John King USA' Struggles To Catch On



If CNN thought "John King, USA" would help solve their ratings problems, they'll have to think again.

Mediaite reported earlier this week that the show, which replaced "Lou Dobbs Tonight" at 7PM, was off to a "slow start."

Over his first three weeks, the site reported, King was down 37% in total viewers and 42% in the A25-54 demographic compared to Dobbs' ratings the same three weeks the year before.

Now TVNewser notes that the program just notched a new low: on Wednesday, it averaged just 54,000 viewers the A25-54 demographic, CNN's worst showing in the demo in the 7PM timeslot since December 2004.

Terrorists 'could use exploding breast implants to blow up jet'
Breast-implants packed with explosives could be used by terrorists to blow up an airliner, experts have reportedly warned.


Radical Islamist plastic surgeons could be carrying out the implant operations in lawless areas of Pakistan, security sources are said to warned.

Explosives experts have reportedly said just five ounces of Pentaerythritol Tetrabitrate packed into a breast implant would be enough to blow a “considerable” hole in the side of a jumbo jet.

It would be virtually impossible for airport security scanners to detect the explosive if hidden inside a breast, medics have said.

Joseph Farah, a terrorism expert, told The Sun: "Women suicide bombers recruited by al-Qaeda are known to have had the explosives inserted in their breasts under techniques similar to breast enhancing surgery."

Plastic surgeons may also have inserted the chemical into the buttocks of would-be suicide bombers.

The discovery was reportedly made after Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a London-educated Nigerian, attempted to blow up an airliner bound for Detroit on Christmas day with explosives packed into his underpants.

Hours after his attack failed, British intelligence services reportedly picked up “chatter” from Pakistan and Yemen that alerted them to the bizarre new method.

One plastic surgeon told The Sun: "Properly inserted the implant would be virtually impossible to detect by the usual airport scanning machines.

"You would need to subject a suspect to a sophisticated X-ray. Given that the explosive would be inserted in a sealed plastic sachet, and would be a small amount, would make it all the more impossible to spot it with the usual body scanner."

Congratulations to you and the National Action Network for another year of fighting for the rights of those who have no voice, and lifting up causes that would otherwise go unnoticed. I regret that I am unable to join you at what is sure to be a wonderful 2010 National Action Network convention.

This has been one of the most challenging times in our nation, but because of the work and investments we made through the Recovery Act and other policies during our first year, the economy is beginning to show signs of strength.

However, we are acutely aware of the unacceptably high unemployment rate – particularly for African Americans – and we understand the critical need to create jobs and develop pathways to opportunity. A Church In Crisis

A must-read for Sunday: Hans Kung's devastating indictment of his former theological partner, Joseph Ratzinger. It's an open letter to the bishops. Money quote:

Missed is the opportunity to make the spirit of the Second Vatican Council the compass for the whole Catholic Church, including the Vatican itself, and thus to promote the needed reforms in the church.

This last point, respected bishops, is the most serious of all. Time and again, this pope has added qualifications to the conciliar texts and interpreted them against the spirit of the council fathers. Time and again, he has taken an express stand against the Ecumenical Council, which according to canon law represents the highest authority in the Catholic Church:

He has taken the bishops of the traditionalist Pius X Society back into the church without any preconditions – bishops who were illegally consecrated outside the Catholic Church and who reject central points of the Second Vatican Council (including liturgical reform, freedom of religion and the rapprochement with Judaism).

He promotes the medieval Tridentine Mass by all possible means and occasionally celebrates the Eucharist in Latin with his back to the congregation.

He refuses to put into effect the rapprochement with the Anglican Church, which was laid out in official ecumenical documents by the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission, and has attempted instead to lure married Anglican clergy into the Roman Catholic Church by freeing them from the very rule of celibacy that has forced tens of thousands of Roman Catholic priests out of office.

He has actively reinforced the anti-conciliar forces in the church by appointing reactionary officials to key offices in the Curia (including the secretariat of state, and positions in the liturgical commission) while appointing reactionary bishops around the world.

Pope Benedict XVI seems to be increasingly cut off from the vast majority of church members who pay less and less heed to Rome and, at best, identify themselves only with their local parish and bishop.

I know that many of you are pained by this situation. In his anti-conciliar policy, the pope receives the full support of the Roman Curia. The Curia does its best to stifle criticism in the episcopate and in the church as a whole and to discredit critics with all the means at its disposal. With a return to pomp and spectacle catching the attention of the media, the reactionary forces in Rome have attempted to present us with a strong church fronted by an absolutistic “Vicar of Christ” who combines the church’s legislative, executive and judicial powers in his hands alone. But Benedict’s policy of restoration has failed. All of his spectacular appearances, demonstrative journeys and public statements have failed to influence the opinions of most Catholics on controversial issues. This is especially true regarding matters of sexual morality. Even the papal youth meetings, attended above all by conservative-charismatic groups, have failed to hold back the steady drain of those leaving the church or to attract more vocations to the priesthood.

You in particular, as bishops, have reason for deep sorrow: Tens of thousands of priests have resigned their office since the Second Vatican Council, for the most part because of the celibacy rule. Vocations to the priesthood, but also to religious orders, sisterhoods and lay brotherhoods are down – not just quantitatively but qualitatively. Resignation and frustration are spreading rapidly among both the clergy and the active laity. Many feel that they have been left in the lurch with their personal needs, and many are in deep distress over the state of the church. In many of your dioceses, it is the same story: increasingly empty churches, empty seminaries and empty rectories. In many countries, due to the lack of priests, more and more parishes are being merged, often against the will of their members, into ever larger “pastoral units,” in which the few surviving pastors are completely overtaxed. This is church reform in pretense rather than fact!

And now, on top of these many crises comes a scandal crying out to heaven – the revelation of the clerical abuse of thousands of children and adolescents, first in the United States, then in Ireland and now in Germany and other countries. And to make matters worse, the handling of these cases has given rise to an unprecedented leadership crisis and a collapse of trust in church leadership.

Welcome to Confederate History Month

It's kind of like that legendary stunt on the prime-time soap "Dallas," where we learned that nothing bad had really happened because the previous season's episodes were all a dream. We now know that the wave of anger that crashed on the Capitol as the health care bill passed last month — the death threats and epithets hurled at members of Congress — was also a mirage.

Take it from the louder voices on the right. Because no tape has surfaced of anyone yelling racial slurs at the civil rights icon and Georgia Congressman John Lewis, it’s now a blogosphere “fact” that Lewis is a liar and the “lamestream media” concocted the entire incident. The same camp maintains as well that the spit landing on the Missouri Congressman Emanuel Cleaver was inadvertent spillover saliva from an over-frothing screamer — spittle, not spit, as it were. True, there is video evidence of the homophobic venom directed at Barney Frank — but, hey, Frank is white, so no racism there!

“It’s Not About Race” declared a headline on a typical column defending over-the-top “Obamacare” opponents from critics like me, who had the nerve to suggest a possible racial motive in the rage aimed at the likes of Lewis and Cleaver — neither of whom were major players in the Democrats’ health care campaign. It’s also mistaken, it seems, for anyone to posit that race might be animating anti-Obama hotheads like those who packed assault weapons at presidential town hall meetings on health care last summer. And surely it is outrageous for anyone to argue that conservative leaders are enabling such extremism by remaining silent or egging it on with cries of “Reload!” to pander to the Tea Party-Glenn Beck base. As Beck has said, it’s Obama who is the real racist.

I would be more than happy to stand corrected. But the story of race and the right did not, alas, end with the health care bill. Hardly had we been told that all that ugliness was a fantasy than we learned back in the material world that the new Republican governor of Virginia, Robert McDonnell, had issued a state proclamation celebrating April as Confederate History Month.

In doing so, he was resuscitating a dormant practice that had been initiated in 1997 by George Allen, the Virginia governor whose political career would implode in 2006 when he was caught on camera calling an Indian-American constituent “macaca.” McDonnell had been widely hailed by his party as a refreshing new “big tent” conservative star when he took office in Richmond, the former capital of the Confederacy, in January. So perhaps his Dixiecrat proclamation, if not a dream, might have been a staff-driven gaffe rather than a deliberate act of racial provocation.

That hope evaporated once McDonnell was asked to explain why there was no mention of slavery in his declaration honoring “the sacrifices of the Confederate leaders, soldiers and citizens.” After acknowledging that slavery was among “any number of aspects to that conflict between the states,” the governor went on to say that he had focused on the issues “I thought were most significant for Virginia.” Only when some of his own black supporters joined editorialists in observing that slavery was significant to some Virginians too — a fifth of the state’s population is black — did he beat a retreat and apologize.

But his original point had been successfully volleyed, and it was not an innocent mistake. McDonnell’s words have a well-worn provenance. In “Race and Reunion,” the definitive study of Civil War revisionism, the historian David W. Blight documents the long trajectory of the insidious campaign to erase slavery from the war’s history and reconfigure the lost Southern cause as a noble battle for states’ rights against an oppressive federal government. In its very first editorial upon resuming publication in postwar 1865, The Richmond Dispatch characterized the Civil War as a struggle for the South’s “sense of rights under the Constitution.” The editorial contained not “a single mention of slavery or black freedom,” Blight writes. That evasion would be a critical fixture of the myth-making to follow ever since.

The Tea Party: Populism of the privileged

The Tea Party is nothing new. It represents a relatively small minority of Americans on the right end of politics, and it will not determine the outcome of the 2010 elections

In fact, both major parties stand to lose if they accept the laughable notion that this media-created protest movement is the voice of true populism. Democrats will spend their time chasing votes they will never win. Republicans will turn their party into an angry and narrow redoubt with no hope of building a durable majority.

The news media's incessant focus on the Tea Party is creating a badly distorted picture of what most Americans think and is warping our policy debates. The New York Times and CBS News thus performed a public service last week with a careful study of just who is in the Tea Party movement.

Their findings suggest that the Tea Party is essentially the reappearance of an old anti-government far right that has always been with us and accounts for about one-fifth of the country. The Times reported that Tea Party supporters "tend to be Republican, white, male, married and older than 45." They are also more affluent and better educated than Americans as a whole. This is the populism of the privileged.

And the poll suggested something that white Americans are reluctant to discuss: Part of the anger at President Obama among Tea Partiers does appear to be driven by racial concerns.

I am a native of Mississippi. I was born and raised on the Gulf Coast in a relatively small town named after the moss that dangles -- at least before disease struck -- from magnolia trees. And this quaint and complicated place, no matter how far I go or run, remains the cornerstone of who I am. I left home early: running from my father and from the burden of a state that carries on its shoulders the burdens of a nation. Of course, both continually haunt.

As you can imagine, I was particularly struck by Haley Barbour's comments about the controversy over Confederate History Month and slavery. Not so much because he failed to exhibit the requisite moral sensitivity towards African Americans. It is not enough to say that slavery was obviously wrong. Too much blood and death resides there; Barbour's words, intended or not, were offensive.

For me, the fact that he is the Governor of Mississippi, a place where the revenant of our racist past lives alongside the failures of our present, matters deeply. How could he blaspheme? Of all Americans, Mississippians should know better -- even if they don't act better.

But Barbour's remarks reveal how a kind of easy forgetfulness (or, worse, a deliberate erasure) can free one from the burdens and responsibilities of the past and sanction callousness towards the dead and living that walk in your backyard. Mississippi has always been a metaphor for America. And it remains so today (even with a black man in the White House). Statistically how do African Americans in my state fare in terms of poverty, health care, education, and incarceration? What does it mean that in 2010 the court ordered the Walthall School district to desegregate? And why isn't Barbour, who dares to describe himself as "a fat redneck with an accent," asked to give an account as he rails repeatedly against the health care bill? Every time I hear him these days I find myself mumbling Nina's words: "Mississippi Goddamn."

April 21st marks the seventh anniversary of Nina Simone's death. Hers was a voice that challenged us in so many ways. I have always loved her ironic use of the show tune to call attention to the murders of Medgar Evers in Mississippi and the four little children in Birmingham, Alabama.

And everybody knows about Mississippi Goddamn

Mississippi and its violence function in the song as common sense; its horrors are known and its failures are deeply felt. And as Nina calls attention to the contradictions and the hypocrisy, as she demands equality for herself and black people, Mississippi stands in for America as such. Her words rest alongside the actions of those young people who dared fifty years ago this month to organize the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and later in April of 1964 found the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to challenge the brutality of American racism.

Barbour's words occasion an opportunity to lift up their sacrifice and courage -- to remember their resolve to suffer the evils of men and women in pursuit of justice.

I have long since reconciled myself to my birthplace. My Southern accent has somewhat diminished (except when I talk with my mother), but Mississippi remains in my blood stream. It is, after all, my inheritance. The memory of its blood soaked soil allows me to embrace, with some depth of feeling, this most complicated of American places -- to possess, even if he could not imagine them in my hands, William Faulkner's words: "That man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance."

Barbour's words, however, ring shallow. No repentance resides therein. Luke 13:5 comes to mind: "unless you repent, you too will all perish."

Much more is required of Americans if we are to step into the future that awaits. We must not turn our backs on the past or fall silent before its torment. We must look it squarely in the face in order to be released, if just for a moment, from its tyranny. Those who live in the South, especially in Mississippi, should lead the way. But, for now, too many Southern voices spout a kind of forgetfulness that can only harden the soul and seal our fate. Mississippi Goddamn!

Fox News Defends Over The Top Rhetoric From Tea Party

Now, you're never going to hear any GOP official admit this, but I suspect that the tea party movement has become a bit like Frankenstein's monster to the party establishment. They fomented its origins, fed its growth and now they're having a hard time controlling the beast. It is too wild, too unfocused and too liable at this point to take out not only the designated targets, but a few of the party's own as well.

But these petty details do not concern those who blissfully have never been in the trenches, like Bill Kristol. While Juan Williams suggests that these teabaggers may not act as the party establishment would like, Kristol shrugs it off with effusive praise for the "patriots", saying that the tea party is the best thing that has happened to conservatives in a long time.

Is that so, Bill? I think you might be overly generous with that notion:

The Tea Party Express has toured state after state trying to kick up a debate about constitutional rights and cast doubt on the legality of the recently passed health care overhaul, all with an eye toward the 2010 elections.

But while organizers have held the tour as a way to stay front-and-center as a political force, the rallies have also attracted the kinds of mistruths, exaggerations and conspiracy theories that make Tea Party leaders cringe.

Sorry, Billy Boy, but playing in the weeds of birther, tenther and all other manner of conspiratorial thought does not further the Republican Party one iota. Not that I mind you advocating for it, far from it. The more the public conflates the tea party with the GOP, the better off the Democratic Party is, and therefore, the rest of the country. There was a time where there were "adult" Republicans, but by fanning the flames of reactionary, bigoted, fact-free rage, the teabaggers resemble nothing so much as Frankenstein's monster.

By the way, that "Contract from America" the tea party leadership is now calling for candidates to sign in order to get teabagger support? Have you seen a better example of bumper-sticker sloganism over real policies?

This time it's the Contract From America.

All rage and no solutions. That's been the stinging, but partly true, criticism of the national "tea party" movement that has emerged in American politics during the past year.

But conservatives like [Newt] Gingrich and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour hope that the new contract – a crowd-sourced document that used hundreds of suggestions and nearly half a million online votes to produce a 10-point plank for conservative rebellion – defines a way for the tea party movement to bridge angry protests with ballot box success.

Indeed, despite influencing elections in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Virginia, the tea party movement has so far failed to flex real political muscle. It needs to show voters its activists stand for something, not just against President Obama and the Democratic majority in Congress, say many political scientists.[..]

According to a press release from the Tea Party Patriots group that organized the online vote, the 10 points are:

1. Protect the Constitution
2. Reject cap and trade energy reforms
3. Demand a balanced budget
4. Enact fundamental tax reform
5. Restore fiscal responsibility and constitutionally limited government in Washington
6. End runaway government spending
7. Defund, repeal, and replace government-run health care
8. Pass an 'all-of-the-above' energy policy
9. Stop the pork
10. Stop the tax hikes

A key difference from the original Contract With America contract is the absence of stands on social issues such as abortion and the sanctity of marriage – culture war flashpoints that drove deep wedges in the electorate in the 1990s and early 2000s.

It's just another variation on a theme that the Republican Party has used since the Southern Strategy. They play to the lowest common denominator with a bunch of ultimately meaningless talking points (Defund government-run health care? What does that mean? Kill the VA? End Medicare?) to which it will be impossible to keep politicians accountable. After all, look how well Scott Brown, that teabagger victory, has worked for them.

So go ahead, GOP, keep listening to Bill Kristol with his below-the-Mendoza-line record of being correct, and keep regurgitating the same strategies over and over. It may seem momentarily successful, but the truth wins out in the end every time.

The White House has announced that President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will visit the North Carolina mountains next weekend.

On Friday, the couple will travel to Asheville, where they will spend the weekend. The White House did not disclose where the Obamas will stay, but no public events are planned, according to a news release Friday.

During the 2008 campaign, Obama prepared for one of the presidential debates in Asheville. During that trip, he made a surprise visit to the Grove Park Inn for the Vance-Aycock dinner, a gathering of Democrats.

Lawd...people hunting possum not far from the empty city limits...selling it because there's no money for meat.

Yet, neighborhood gardens are popping up, thank goodness.

They did have some updates on Kwame Kilpatrick. And the utter disgust people have for the whole black governing apparatus in Detroit.

I didn't like it when they started to talk to Kid Rock and a couple of other whites about whether Detroit will return or not. They may be providing jobs by beginning businesses, but it's not enough.

That was the big mistake of the show.

Of course, Kid Rock brought in all the white suburban flight kids to a weekend concert that brought everyone into town and they spent money in the city. And he opened up a brewery that gives some jobs to folks.

And Hollywood comes to make movies there. But that is just about the size of what can be done for Detroit.

Washington Post Readers Enraged With Robin Givhan’s Coverage of FLOTUS Michelle Obama

This is Gina. Okay maybe that title was a bit melodramatic :) But its nice to know that other people have noticed the wretched coverage of First Lady Michelle Obama coming out of the Washington Post’s “style” section via Robin Givhan. Why is Mrs. Obama being covered in that section anyway? I could understand the state dinner, but the Lets’ Move campaign clearly belongs in the health or science section. Her first solo international trip abroad probably belonged in the news, politics or foreign affairs section. But no, it got covered by a style editor who is none too curious about anything other than what people wear.

One Washington Post reader took umbrage. I say BRAVA to Nancy Loving!:

Concerning obesity, Robin Givhan seemed surprised that Obama “sounded more like an executive about to dive into the minutiae of an immense project than a first lady speaking in sweeping statements that are designed to inspire” ["Obama cuts to the nitty-gritty on kids' obesity," Style, April 10].

Since Obama is a Harvard-trained lawyer and a former hospital executive, that’s exactly what she was doing: addressing one of the most urgent public health issues of our day.

That statement about how Mrs. Obama and other “First Ladies” are supposed to “sound” says a great deal about Givhan’s views on the roles of women who are married to politicians. Apparently they can’t be business-like once their husbands take the oath of office. I can’t wait until we get our first woman president, then Robin won’t have anything to write about. I hope the first husband/gentlemean wears dungarees every day and drives her crazy. Dungarees and those multi-colored golf pants- I can’t wait.

GOP Rebuffs Dem Concession On Financial Reform

Senate Republicans say they're prepared to work constructively with Democrats on a consensus financial reform bill. But this weekend, after the White House offered up a key substantive concession, they swatted President Obama's hand away in a fashion that was all too reminiscent of their strategy of opposition to health care reform.

"We ought to go back to the drawing board," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on CNN Sunday morning.

Likewise, moderate Republican Scott Brown (R-MA), once considered a swing vote on regulatory reform, explicitly threatened to vote to block the bill from even being debated. Asked by CBS' Bob Schieffer if he'd filibuster the bill rather than let it come to the Senate floor, Brown was unequivocal: "In this particular instance, yes," he said.

The statements from Brown and McConnell came two days after the administration signaled it would push Democrats to drop a provision in their bill that Republicans broadly oppose: a $50 billion liquidation fund, raised by imposing a tax on major financial institutions, that would be used to cover the government's costs in the event that it has to liquidate an insolvent firm.

On Friday, after news of the administration's position broke, McConnell made clear he wanted to see more. "I appreciate the Obama administration's recognition of the need to substantively improve this bill," reads McConnell's official statement. "And I hope we can work with them to close the remaining bailout loopholes that put American taxpayers on the hook for financial institutions that become 'too big to fail.'"

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) also said she'd vote to block debate on the Democrats' bill, unless Republicans get to take a crack at it, but that was before the concession on the liquidation fund was first reported.

That leaves the two parties on the exact same collision course they embarked upon last week. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he will try to bring the bill to the floor by week's end, daring Republicans to use Senate filibuster rules to block any debate on the bill at all. Recent events may strengthen the Democrats' hand. On Friday, the Securities and Exchange Commission charged Goldman Sachs with securities fraud--a case they rightfully argue highlights the need for expedient passage of legislation imposing tougher rules on Wall Street. And Republican leaders have been hard pressed to explain away their attempts to secure donations from Wall Street in exchange for their efforts to weaken the bill.

If Republicans follow through on their threat to block the bill from coming to the floor, it will take the political fight over regulatory reform in a new direction.

The banks own the President lock stock and barrel. Any money in the liquidation fund acts as a check on all the firms not to use their capital to back irresponsible players. To suggest they'd drop the the liquidation fund is to continue the policy of privatizing the profits and socializing the the losses. This has to stop.

We followed the most radical voices in the party and the movement, and they led us to abject and irreversible defeat.

There were leaders who knew better, who would have liked to deal. But they were trapped. We have both been part of the conservative movement for, as mentioned, the better part of half of our lives. Hello

I don't really follow any "Tea Party" news, non-stop illogical coverage. And I definitely stay as far as I can from their hateful, lame signs (how could that NYT poll find teabaggers to be "well educated" is quite strange to me). But since it was quite impossible to avoid them completely over the past few days, two quotes caught my attention:

1. "It's not just because he's black...."

2. "He's not my president, never ever will be...".

And it got me thinking....

At first, my reaction was: well, Duh. Of course he's not their president. it's not just because he's black, it's also because he's a Kenyan-born-Muslim, a socialist, communist, Marxist, fascist, America-hating Nazi, a regular Adolf Stalin!

But then I thought, this is too easy. It's gotta be something more. The very interesting Muzikal203' diary suggested another possibility: It's not enough that he's black (Kenyan-born-Muslim, a socialist, communist, Marxist, fascist, America-hating Nazi, a regular Adolf Stalin!), he's basically winning 90% of the fights. And it drives them nuts. The amount of things that he managed to achieve in 15 months – and I'm only talking about stuff you can describe as "first ever" or "for the first time in decades" or "the biggest ever" -scares the shit out of their already terrorized souls.

Plus, if someone like him can become president - Hey, Scott Brown "always said that Obama is an American". Hallelujah! - what's next? A gay president????!!! Brrrr.

But i think there's another possible layer to this. Right now I'm in the middle of reading David Remnick' Obama biography – 'The Bridge' (Well, not really in the middle, page 120, and this beast is 600 loaded pages long, and Obama wasn't even born until page 55). Obviously a lot of the stuff is familiar to anyone who read 'Dreams From My Father', but this is from a a very different point of view, it's much more rounded, all the pseudonyms from 'Dreams' get their real names here, many of them are quoted on record, and there's a lot of new stuff too. It's very well written and fascinating. Anyway, that's not the point.

The point is couple of anecdotes from early in the book:

1. The Joella Edwards story ('Correta' in the president's memoir). She was the only black kid in Punahou School in Hawaii and she went through hell there. Kids called her terrible names; she came home crying every day. When she tried to raise her grades and started studying harder, her teacher accused her of cheating and she was forced to take the test again. So after the ninth grade, she dropped out and enrolled in a public school. "I was a basket case for years", she told Remnick.

The only thing that kept her sane that year was this new kid, Barry.

Here's Joella:

"When we first met, we were ten years old. He came to school and I was so excited. This kid has my same coloring. He looked like me. He was just like me. We didn't avoid each other, we were drawn to each other, but we had to keep our distance, or they all mocked us as a couple – the two black kids. And yet, Barry never rejected me. He was my knight in shining armor".

2. One quote from Lisa Jack, a friend who took this famous photo shoot when they were at Occidental College: "If he saw you sitting alone, he would just come sit down with you".

3. And the story of Sohale Siddiqi, a guy from Pakistan who overstayed his tourist visa and was living illegally on the Upper east Side, and somehow became one of young Obama's best friends when he just arrived to New York and went to Colombia University. Siddiqi was trouble. He was drinking and doing drugs. Young Barack Obama was beyond that already, yet they became friends and shared an apartment, even though they lived an entirely different lives. Obama refused to judge him. Siddiqi told Remnick: "At that age, I thought he was a saint and a square, and he took himself too seriously. I would ask him why he was so serious. He was genuinely concerned with the plight of the poor. He would give me lectures, which I thought were boring".

Is white the new black?

lenn Beck excels at expressing adventurous thoughts in memorable language, but he outdid himself when, one morning last summer, he offered a diagnosis of President Obama. He said, “This President, I think, has exposed himself as a guy, over and over and over again, who has a deep-seated hatred for white people, or the white culture. I don’t know what it is.” (The context was one of the summer’s most entertaining reality shows—the one starring the black Harvard professor and the white police officer who arrested him.) In September, Beck sat for an interview with Katie Couric, and she asked him a deceptively simple question, which had been posed by a Twitter user named adrianinflorida: “what did u mean white culture?” Whatever adventurous thoughts this query inspired, Beck did not seem eager to share them. “Um, I, I don’t know,” he said. Finally, after two minutes of temporizing, he arrived at a nonresponsive response that was both honest and sensible: “What is the white culture? I don’t know how to answer that that’s not a trap, you know what I mean?”

Often, the most appropriate answer to that question is a joke, or a series of jokes. In 2008, a canny young white Canadian named Christian Lander started a blog called “Stuff White People Like,” which soon became a best-selling book bearing the same title; it listed a hundred and fifty of white people’s favorite things, from recycling to the Red Sox. (This magazine made the list, too, at No. 114.) Lander’s tone is faux-anthropological but wide-eyed: “Bike shops are almost entirely staffed and patronized by white people!”; “After learning that a white person is pregnant, it is a good idea to provide a list of recipes for placenta.” His “white people” are wealthy, urban, youngish, and thoroughly blue—they “hate” Republicans, and although Obama hadn’t yet won the Democratic nomination, he placed eighth on the list. (Coffee was No. 1.)

Which means that Lander isn’t really talking about white people, or, at any rate, not most of them. In fact, he sometimes defines “white people” in opposition to “the wrong kind of white people,” because his true target is a small subset of white people, a white cultural élite. Most white people don’t “hate” Republicans—they have voted Republican in every Presidential election since 1968. A few months ago, a different and more demographically precise portrait of white culture arrived, bearing a fulsome blurb (“Revelatory!”) from Lander himself. The author is a black journalist named Rich Benjamin, and his book, “Searching for Whitopia” (Hyperion; $24.99), chronicles the years he spent in overwhelmingly white enclaves across America, from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to Forsyth County, Georgia. The people he meets tend to be politically conservative, and although they talk readily about the urban blight they left behind, they talk much less readily about race. Many in Idaho seem to agree with Helen Chenoweth-Hage, the late congresswoman, who responded to a question about the region’s lack of diversity by means of an ingenious euphemism. “The warm-climate community just hasn’t found the colder climate that attractive,” she said. Benjamin hears many disavowals of racism, and he has to drive an hour north of Coeur d’Alene, to a tiny Christian Identity church, in a town called Sandpoint, just to find someone willing to say, “I’m glad I’m white.” Even that statement, delivered from the pulpit, is swiftly followed by a disclaimer: “The Indian, the Mexican, and the black can be proud of what they are, too.”

Benjamin did most of his research toward the end of the Bush era, and perhaps he now wishes he had waited a few years. Obama’s election was a transformative moment for blacks in America, but it has also proved to be a transformative moment for whites. As a whole, white people voted for Senator McCain, and, with the growth of the anti-Obama backlash, especially in the form of Tea Party protests, the whiteness of the Obama opposition has become a political issue. Keith Olbermann, of MSNBC, called the Tea Party movement “a white people’s party,” and asked, in reference to the various marches and rallies, “Where are the black faces?” (The most adroit response came in the form of a YouTube video highlighting the all-white lineup pictured on the MSNBC Web site.) When Jon Stewart introduced a “Daily Show” segment on the Conservative Political Action Conference, he got a laugh from his studio audience by calling it a “festival of whites.” (Stewart’s show ranked thirty-fifth on Lander’s list.)

Read this article. the author twisted themselves into such knots it's funny. No matter how much they recognize 'whiteness" is a social trait they refuse to acknowledge it is the basis for racism in this country and the source of many problems. To say as the author does "white" is a work in progress is an attempt to take the social constrict of "white" away from its racist basis is just one of the ways in which the author does it.

Greensburg bishop, sisters at odds over health bill

Bishop Lawrence Brandt of the Catholic Diocese of Greensburg has declared that religious sisters from communities whose leaders endorsed the final version of the national health care reform bill can no longer promote their recruitment events in his parishes or in the diocesan newspaper.

"He has the right to disapprove a request from a religious community that wants to host a recruitment event when that community has taken a public stance in opposition to the Church's teaching on human life," said diocesan spokesman Jerry Zufelt.

"Furthermore an environment of dissent and public opposition to the positions of the U.S. Catholic bishops does not provide an appropriate seedbed for vocations."

But the sisters say they support church teaching on abortion, and disagreed only with the bishops' analysis of how the bill would affect abortion coverage.

"Based on our prayerful discernment and careful research with other Catholic-based groups and agencies advocating for comprehensive health care reform, we believe that the bill indicated that there will be no public funding for abortions and that it would not violate doctrinal and moral teachings of the Church," said Sister Mary Pellegrino, moderator of the leadership team of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden. With the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg, hers is one of two local communities whose leaders signed a March 17 statement drafted by the Catholic social justice lobby Network.

Although the bishops wanted universal health care, they believed the bill contained loopholes that would undercut a 34-year ban on federal funding of elective abortions, and that President Barack Obama's executive order extending that ban to the health plan wouldn't be legally enforceable.

The sisters are welcome to continue working in the diocese, and the bishop is in dialogue with them about resolving the recruitment problem, Mr. Zufelt said.

"This situation is fluid. Things aren't set in concrete," he said.

The Sisters of St. Joseph learned of Bishop Brandt's order after they asked the diocese to promote their "Explore" weekend for teenage girls who want to know what it's like to be a sister. Subsequently, on April 8, Msgr. Lawrence Persico, vicar general of the diocese, e-mailed all priests and parish leaders, saying that communities whose leaders signed the Network statement could not promote their vocations events in any parish, in the diocesan newspaper or at diocesan events.

The Network letter took issue with the bishops' analysis of the health reform bill.

"While it is an imperfect measure, it is a crucial next step in realizing health care for all," the statement said. "And despite false claims to the contrary, the Senate bill will not provide taxpayer funding for elective abortions. It will uphold long-standing conscience protections and it will make historic new investments -- $250 million -- in support of pregnant women. This is the REAL pro-life stance, and we as Catholics are all for it."

It was signed by more than 60 sisters, many of them community superiors, and by the president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, which includes the superiors of most women's communities in the U.S. The next day the much smaller Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious spoke out in opposition to the health care bill, for the same reasons as the bishops.

Bob Fetter, director of public relations for the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, said the sisters had no intention of opposing church teaching on abortion.

"Ultimately we sit on the same side of these beliefs as the bishop does. This wasn't something that was done to try to divide the church," he said.

Mr. Fetter said that when Sister Vivien Linkhauer, the provincial superior, signed the letter, she was unaware of how strongly the bishops opposed the bill.

"Had she known that there was strong opposition there, it may have had a different outcome," he said.

Although Bishop David Zubik has taken no action, "he does intend to have a pastoral conversation with those who signed the statement ... to find out why they signed," said the Rev. Ronald Lengwin, spokesman for the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

The Rev. Larry Roberts Sr., a former unionized beverage truck driver, is leading a group of black ministers who favor building two Wal-Marts on Chicago's South Side.

High unemployment has given Roberts a platform in a six-year fight between unions and the world's largest retailer over a proposed store at 83rd Street and Stewart Avenue, near Roberts' church. Mayor Richard Daley has voiced support for Wal-Mart's expansion but declined to muscle the proposal through City Hall.

here's the deal.

it's all BULLSHYT - those who oppose the WalMart.

the ' Unions' - that's who the Aldermen who are shucking and jiving against the WalMart are actually working for.

the same fucking Unions - THAT WON'T ALLOW ANY BLACK FOLKS INTO THEM.

So, these shinning and grinning KNEEGROWS, are talking about 'a fair and decent wage' in neighborhoods where 30% of Black folks are unemployed. They want to wait for ' good, decent paying jobs' to come into these neighborhoods. It's bull and you know it.

There's a space that's been vacant for 5 years - that's about how long this one alderman has been fighting FOR a Wal-Mart. IFFF some other big box store was going to come over to that space, they would have done so. But, they haven't. and, other stores, that WOULD come WHEN WAL-MART COMES haven't come, because WalMart isn't there.

Another thing that this is about is professional jealousy. The Alderman who has been fighting for the WalMart , well, let's just say, among the 19 wards headed by Black folk, his is among the top 3 with the most development, i.e., if you're a citizen in that ward, guess what, you don't have to leave that Ward for basic goods and services. If he gets the WalMart, and fully develops the area that he's set aside for it - it was an old can factory , then I think, some of the other alderman, who cry and complain with a list of excuses a mile long why they can't get any stores in their wards - I think it's another crab mentality.

Not a fan of Wal-Mart, but the other Black alderman who got the only WalMart put in her ward got them to
1. use a Black contractor TO BUILD IT
2. give those spots for food selling to Black vendors
3. got them to agree to hire from the neighborhood
4. and a certain % are set aside for former felons who want a legit job.

I believe that THIS Alderman - Brookins- has done no less in his negotiations for this WalMart.

Silver Looks at Rasmussen

I had a conversation with Nate Silver in Pittsburgh last year about Rasmussen Polling. It wasn't an easy conversation because it took place during the Netroots Nation afterparty in a noisy bar. But I basically implored him to look into their polling practices because it seemed obvious to me that they were creating dishonest product and lots of it, and that it was skewing polling averages on issues and approval ratings that were hurting Democrats in virtually every news cycle.

Not long after our conversation, Silver did expose a Republican leaning pollster, but it turned out to be Strategic Vision instead of Rasmussen. I has happy to see the statistical master take them down, but I was frustrated that he didn't seem able to nail Rasmussen, who I felt and still feel are far more pernicious and influential in distorting the debate in this country.

So, I am extremely happy to see Silver has started asking tough questions of Rasmussen. In essence, he can't say for certain that Rasmussen is wrong, but he can expose their house effect. Here's the thing to remember. In order for pollsters to have credibility and attract clients and have influence, they absolutely must do a good job of predicting the outcomes of elections. But their performance is judged by their last poll in the field. They can skew results in a Republican direction in the weeks and months before an election to help candidates look viable and raise money (and do the opposite to the Democrat) without paying any price for it. They can make the Democrats look more unpopular than they really are and make proposed legislation look like it is loathed by the public. They can do this because there is never an accountability moment on those types of questions. And that is what I firmly believe that Rasmussen is doing. It's not a bug, but a feature of their polling that it is about 6% more favorable to Republicans than the average of the rest of the pollsters. And I expect that house effect to slowly dwindle down to almost nothing by election day because they want to be as accurate as possible in predicting who will win. After all, on election day, we have winners and losers, and we can judge the pollsters strictly by whether they made the right predictions. We can't do that on the president's or health care's popularity.

Kathleen Parker: Due to rhetoric of right-wing pundits, "volatility could become explosive"

Is the political environment becoming so toxic that we could see another Timothy McVeigh emerge?

No one knows the answer, but fears that anger could escalate into action beyond the ballot box are not misplaced. Ninety-nine percent of angry Americans might be perfectly satisfied to rail at their television sets -- or to show up at a Tea Party rally -- but it takes only one.

The biggest concern for security folks in Washington is the lone operator, the John Hinckley, who tries to take out a president for his fantasy girlfriend. Or some variation thereof.

This is why "Don't retreat. Reload," Sarah Palin's recent imperative to her Tea Party audience, felt so off. Obviously, she wasn't suggesting that people arm themselves, as she has explained several times since. Hunting and military vocabulary are hardly new to politics. We "target" audiences or "set our sights" on policies and politicians all the time. In the world of healthy competition, trophies are victories, not dead people.

But words matter, as we never tire of saying. And these are especially sensitive times, given our first African American president and unavoidable fears about the worst-case scenario. If Jodie Foster could bestir the imagination of Hinckley, a Sarah Palin in the Internet age could move regiments.

Parker's piece is a mixture of gobbledygook. If words matter so much to Kathleen Parker, she'd call the tea party's behavior what it is. She's part of the problem, as far as I'm concerned. Really, "NO one knows the answer."
