California's Boxer says chicken labels should disclose saline 'plumping'

WASHINGTON — California Sen. Barbara Boxer and poultry producers on Wednesday called for stricter labeling so that consumers know when their chicken is stuffed with salt water.

About 30 percent of the poultry sold nationwide is injected with saline solution, in a process called "plumping." Currently, the Agriculture Department allows this plumped-up poultry to be labeled as "all natural."

"Consumers are getting ripped off," Boxer said. "There is nothing natural about chicken that is injected with sodium additives." » read more

SeaWorld trainer's death shows peril of keeping whales captive

Three years ago, Russ Rector, a Fort Lauderdale dolphin trainer turned marine mammal activist, said he wrote SeaWorld a letter warning it was pushing its show mammals too hard to wow audiences, thereby inviting attacks on trainers.

On Wednesday, a killer whale named Tilikum implicated in two previous fatalities attacked a trainer during a show at the Orlando theme park, dragging her around like a toy and drowning her in front of horrified visitors.

Judge: Lejeune ex-resident can move ahead with injury claim

WASHINGTON — For what appears to be the first time, a former resident of Camp Lejeune, N.C., has been permitted to move ahead with a claim against the Marine Corps for years of water contamination that she says led to the development of her non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The U.S. Department of the Navy, which includes the Marines, this week lost its bid to dismiss the case of Laura J. Jones of Iowa, who lived at Camp Lejeune from 1980 to 1983 as the spouse of a Marine officer.

In 2005, more than two decades after she left North Carolina, Jones was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. » read more
