It looks like Cliffski wants modding to start for Gratuitous Space Battles even before he’s properly released the game, as he’s releasing the ship models for people to fiddle with. “Basically I couldn’t think of a good reason not to give modders access to the raw models that are used to make the art in the game,” says Cliffski, “and I know that if I was a modder, I’d find that very handy indeed, and be churning out lots of variants and tweaks of it.” The full game launch is apparently happening this week, with the release version of the game going up on the Positech site on Thursday.

How's the Beta for this? Never had much interest in it and the Desktop Tower Defense analogy never did much to change my mind.

The impression I got was it was a bit blah. Has it gotten any better since the initial flurry of excitement died down?

    • Man Raised By Puffins says:

I’ve had some good fun mucking about with the beta, but if you’re on the fence about it I’d suggest waiting for the demo to see whether it’s your kind of thing or not.

  2. Schmung says:

Well this is splendid. Totally going to have a fiddle with this.

  3. Andytizer says:

Does anyone know if this would work on a netbook?

    • cliffski says:

depends on the netbook. If it can handle a screen height of 768 pixels, it should be fine (you might do well to turn off some of the more gratuitous options). Less than 768 pixels and the game can’t run.

  4. subedii says:

I’m pretty certain Cliffski said it’ll run on a netbook.

  5. JoeCairo says:

Yep, it runs fine on my Acer Inspire. Can be a bit fiddly designing the ships, mind, so I’d recommend learning the game on something a bit more gratuitously-sized.

  6. Peter says:

Does anyone know if there will be DRMcrap other than Steam? That’s pretty much the only possible obstacle to me buying it.

(Just like the only reason I haven’t bought DoW2 was the Grief for Windows Lusers requirement).

    • TotalBiscuit says:

Cliffski does not put DRM on his games.

    • Schaulustiger says:

Cliffskis games are always 100% DRM-free if you buy them directly from his website. That’s one of his core principles and a good reason to support him. And hey, besides that, GSB is a really great game :)

  7. FP says:

Good game but still seems quite buggy, i.e. it has a pretty high chance of crashing whenever you alt-tab, I hope cliffski fixes that before final release.

  8. Psychopomp says:

Cliffski obviously knows knows audience well.

  9. Hodge says:

    Cliffski is a golden god.

  10. Gnoupi says:

Cliffski obviously knows how to communicate with his public, looking at the number of “cliffski did that, cliffski said that”. He managed to make himself a name in the independant community, it’s great (well, making good games probably helped).

  11. Kelduum Revaan says:

Cliffski does not sleep. He waits.

  12. stahlwerk says:

Imperial Star Destroyer mod in 3.. 2.. 1..

  13. shiggz says:

Cliffski himself often posts here in threads answering questions about his work. And shock even answering criticisms. Well the ones that dont involve his mother.
