Now this gets interesting! Despite sites claiming that the game definitely was Call of Duty: Vietnam earlier, PC Gamer reveal that the site for Call of Duty: Black Ops is now live, though impossible to actually get into. And they claim that when the “Black Ops” rumour originally broke, it was a Cold War game with missions from all across that period culminating “in the famous 1980 storming of the Iranian Embassy in London by the SAS”. Who is right? Who is wrong? We’ll know tonight when the trailer rolls. My money’s on Call of Duty: Shaking That Booty, where Activision cross two of their biggest franchises in a shooting/rhythm-action game.
UPDATE: Black Ops confirmed. But will it be a Vietnam black ops/cold war black ops/booty-shaking ops game? You have to suspect Cold War. A Vietnam Black Ops game would be… questionable.

It’s a fantastic setting, but tough to build a game around.
The Cold War invokes so many shades of moral grey that making a ManFaceShoot game about it is a tough job. I hope Treyarch have the moxie to compose their own ‘No Russian’ moments, (Perhaps with more insight, but all of the same impact.), and tell a story that reflects the lessons that period of history taught. Best of luck getting that past the publishers suits.

@Jayt I don’t agree, CS never had the same reach as modern warfare. How many people outside of PC gaming circles has even heard of it? Maybe a bit different these day with the expansion of steam…I dunno.
I can remember CS getting similarish reactions out of stupid tweens a couple years back, not nearly as much as halo though

It’ll be interesting to see if they learned anything from the whole MW2 business. Certainly there was word earlier in the month that this one will see dedicated servers on the PC multiplayer side, which would be nice.
Also, I’ll give Treyarch credit for WaW’s co-op mode, which was a lot of fun. Would hope to see something similar this time round too.
Despite my usual apathy at the prospect of CoD games, the idea of missions from all over the cold war era does sound interesting. How a Iranian embassy seige would actually be to play particulary interesting.

Probably will never happen, unless an israeli team develops the game. although israeli special forces units are among the best in the world and the operations they performed can fill several blockbuster movies and video games, it will be hard to convince an american and european audience to identify itself with the israel soldiers.

I only say that because the premise behind the Black Ops game seems a bit shit. It just sounds like Rainbow Six or cs_office.
I’ve always thought a cold war CoD would be good, but I always imagined it as covering some of the most interesting bits of every major conflict.
Some stuff in Korea, using almost WWII weapons. Maybe the Malayan Emergency for the first SAS mission. The first US engagement in Vietnam, followed later by a Green Beret insertion mission.
Vietnam would also give them a chance to put the ANZACs in a game for once. Then carrying on through more modern stuff, getting more and more into special forces territory, up the Iranian embassy.
Has the developer been announced for this? I assume it’s Activision’s shiny new internal studio, but jeesh… setting three of your studios head to head while saturating the shit out of the FPS market doesn’t make a lick of sense to me, unless its some grand “fear and despair” masterplan.

A cold war setting could be very interesting indeed, ecpecially from a CIA point of view. There are lots of interesting scenarios to choose from:
Helping Contras to smuggle dope into the USA. Or defending a drug lord in Afghanistan or Cambodia against communist free trade haters.
Indstead of a no russian, thee could be a “This is how you do it” scenario, where you, as an empoyee at the School of Americas instruct the police in [Insert random south american country with a dictator here] how to torture.
Another “no russian” replacement could be the My Lai Massacre.
A daring mission, set in IRAQ, where you help Saddam topple The Evil Socialist government.
Joint ops with the Indonesian spec ops to take down a uprising in east timor.
Another joint ops, now set in Africa, where you help the freedom loving country of South Africa to invade Angola.
There are enough daring missions to last for a couple of sequels as well. And if you throw in the secret services of Israel (assassination in Norway!), France (blow that greenpeace boat up!), UK (Operation Albanian Subversion )and Italy (Bomb that Piazza Fontana!) you could probably go on releasing annual sequels for some decades.

Selected events from the cold war would be a brilliant idea, but this is Treyarch. I’m not going to get my hopes up no matter what this turns out to be.
I foresee a mundane single player with a same old same old multi-player that is based off the IW 4.0 engine that was used in mw2.
