Alternatively! Call of Duty: Black Ops

Now this gets interesting! Despite sites claiming that the game definitely was Call of Duty: Vietnam earlier, PC Gamer reveal that the site for Call of Duty: Black Ops is now live, though impossible to actually get into. And they claim that when the “Black Ops” rumour originally broke, it was a Cold War game with missions from all across that period culminating “in the famous 1980 storming of the Iranian Embassy in London by the SAS”. Who is right? Who is wrong? We’ll know tonight when the trailer rolls. My money’s on Call of Duty: Shaking That Booty, where Activision cross two of their biggest franchises in a shooting/rhythm-action game.

UPDATE: Black Ops confirmed. But will it be a Vietnam black ops/cold war black ops/booty-shaking ops game? You have to suspect Cold War. A Vietnam Black Ops game would be… questionable.

It’s a fantastic setting, but tough to build a game around.

The Cold War invokes so many shades of moral grey that making a ManFaceShoot game about it is a tough job. I hope Treyarch have the moxie to compose their own ‘No Russian’ moments, (Perhaps with more insight, but all of the same impact.), and tell a story that reflects the lessons that period of history taught. Best of luck getting that past the publishers suits.

    I won’t hold my breath.

Definitely looks like Black Ops now…

  3. Jayt says:

After the launch of MW2, and then all of the Infinity Ward fiasco I’m so burnt out and sick of hearing about anything cod related. Is it just me?

    • Nah man, remember when there was no call of duty? ah the good old days.

i was in the imperial armouries museum in leeds last weekend, and theres like this cabinet with a few guns in, and these 4 kids come running up and they all say together

“Wow!, just like modern warfare!!” >_<

    • Jayt says:

True, but thats not new. Years ago it would have been the same reaction but replace modern warfare with counter-strike.

    • l1ddl3monkey says:

Nope, my apathy is almost palpable too.

Haven’t played MW2, not interested in doing so.

    • Sarlix says:

Same. I played the very first COD and it had some of the best multi-player maps…. Never bothered with the rest though.

@Jayt I don’t agree, CS never had the same reach as modern warfare. How many people outside of PC gaming circles has even heard of it? Maybe a bit different these day with the expansion of steam…I dunno.

    • poop says:

I can remember CS getting similarish reactions out of stupid tweens a couple years back, not nearly as much as halo though

  4. AndrewC says:

Oh god, an AAA game’s art dept recreating early 80’s London? Yes please!

    • stahlwerk says:

There will be a point in the game where someone turns on the radio and it’s the clash doing “London Calling”. Alternatively: Madness.

Just like if it was set in Sidney it would play the Men at Work.

Musical clichés are the best kind of clichés.

    • AndrewC says:

      Alternatively: Musical Youth!

    • Teachable Moment says:

2010 and still no follow-up album from Musical Youth!

      (Thank you Harry.)

    • RedFred says:

      You mean Sydney?

  5. dantokk says:

Oh man, Courtney Love is gonna be pissed.

  6. HermitUK says:

It’ll be interesting to see if they learned anything from the whole MW2 business. Certainly there was word earlier in the month that this one will see dedicated servers on the PC multiplayer side, which would be nice.

Also, I’ll give Treyarch credit for WaW’s co-op mode, which was a lot of fun. Would hope to see something similar this time round too.

  7. Stense says:

Despite my usual apathy at the prospect of CoD games, the idea of missions from all over the cold war era does sound interesting. How a Iranian embassy seige would actually be to play particulary interesting.

    • AndrewC says:

I’m guessing corridors with men in.

    • Rich says:

Interspersed with rooms with men in.

    • oceanclub says:

I’d love to see a game take on the raid on Entebbe.

      P.

    • Burningpet says:

      @Oceanclub

Probably will never happen, unless an israeli team develops the game. although israeli special forces units are among the best in the world and the operations they performed can fill several blockbuster movies and video games, it will be hard to convince an american and european audience to identify itself with the israel soldiers.

    • GameOverMan says:

      @Burningpet

…unless you played as Chuck Norris in such game.

    • Nerd Rage says:

      @Burningpet

They could cast Leonardo DiCaprio and have him get an Israeli girlfriend, but the catch is he’s really a CIA agent and he’s working with the Mossad. Wait, that sounds strikingly familiar except for one or two details…

  8. The Hammer says:

    “We at Treyarch…”

    Oh.

  9. Caps says:

I hope it has Co-op and zombies. Co-op and zombies in CoD 5 was mighty fun.

    • Rich says:

Woot yeah! The Iranian embassy siege with zombies. OMG AWSOME!

All done in the best possible taste.

    • diebroken says:

Shellshock 2! (yes, I’m one of the few who actually bought and liked it, for what it was…)

  10. Sobric says:

I like people’s reactions on the blog. For a website that contains no information, people seem so excited!

I mean, it’ll be Call of Duty 8.

    • Rich says:

Using a numerical system to indicate the order in which a product was released, is so five years ago.

Sadly, the London mission will take place mostly in the sewers.

    At night.

For what it’s worth, the font used in the logo doesn’t look like Vietnam to me…

  12. Jimbo says:

Maybe *this* is the Black Op, and Vietnam is the real deal, have you thought of that? To keep people guessing until the reveal on GameTrailers tonight.

I only say that because the premise behind the Black Ops game seems a bit shit. It just sounds like Rainbow Six or cs_office.

    • Rich says:

I’ve always thought a cold war CoD would be good, but I always imagined it as covering some of the most interesting bits of every major conflict.

Some stuff in Korea, using almost WWII weapons. Maybe the Malayan Emergency for the first SAS mission. The first US engagement in Vietnam, followed later by a Green Beret insertion mission.
Vietnam would also give them a chance to put the ANZACs in a game for once. Then carrying on through more modern stuff, getting more and more into special forces territory, up the Iranian embassy.

  13. terry says:

Has the developer been announced for this? I assume it’s Activision’s shiny new internal studio, but jeesh… setting three of your studios head to head while saturating the shit out of the FPS market doesn’t make a lick of sense to me, unless its some grand “fear and despair” masterplan.

  14. Sarlix says:

Call of Duty Modern Vietnam Warfare : Black Ops Down.

  15. poop says:

a cold war setting? thank god, if i dont shoot respawning russians in dreary snowy villages and concrete (snowy) bases I go into a coma, thank you activision!!!

  16. theleif says:

A cold war setting could be very interesting indeed, ecpecially from a CIA point of view. There are lots of interesting scenarios to choose from:

Helping Contras to smuggle dope into the USA. Or defending a drug lord in Afghanistan or Cambodia against communist free trade haters.
Indstead of a no russian, thee could be a “This is how you do it” scenario, where you, as an empoyee at the School of Americas instruct the police in [Insert random south american country with a dictator here] how to torture.
Another “no russian” replacement could be the My Lai Massacre.
A daring mission, set in IRAQ, where you help Saddam topple The Evil Socialist government.
Joint ops with the Indonesian spec ops to take down a uprising in east timor.
Another joint ops, now set in Africa, where you help the freedom loving country of South Africa to invade Angola.

There are enough daring missions to last for a couple of sequels as well. And if you throw in the secret services of Israel (assassination in Norway!), France (blow that greenpeace boat up!), UK (Operation Albanian Subversion )and Italy (Bomb that Piazza Fontana!) you could probably go on releasing annual sequels for some decades.

I wasn’t aware that Dr. Chomsky was a reader of RPS…

    • theleif says:

No need to go to that strawny ol’ anarchist to get such info. It’s all on wikipedia.

    • dirtyallen says:

I think you are looking for “anarcho syndicalist” but yes wikipeida is truly the people’s source of information!

    • theleif says:

Yeah, i know he is an anarcho syndicalist, but you have to agree that strawny ol’ anarchist sounds better.
And wikipedia, like any other encyclopedia, is a good initial source of information. But, yeah, you should go to some other source for in-deep info. I heard books are ok. That Chomsky fella has written some, i heard.

  17. Call of Duty: Black Oops we did it again.

A different scenario with no stupid railroad shooting would be great but I have no more hopes for the series.

  18. Rich says:

According to Eurogamer, GAME has put the following in its sales pitch for COD: Black Ops:

“Now you will witness the birth of the Elite Special Forces and take part in off-the-record missions using unconventional weaponry to get the job done! From Cuba to the Arctic and the jungles of Vietnam, Call of Duty: Black Ops features stunning cinematic graphics and intense gameplay that puts you right at the heart of the action”

    Cuba, Arctic and Vietnam.

    From that site:

    BETA OR DONT BUY!!!
I will still buy it though, comes out the day before my B day. Hurry up and build the site! Better not push the launch date back.

Somehow, that for me, sums the IQ of CODMW2 players.

    • Rich says:

      “BETA OR DONT BUY!!!
I will still buy it though”

That’s about all you need to know.

  20. Pantsman says:

Selected events from the cold war would be a brilliant idea, but this is Treyarch. I’m not going to get my hopes up no matter what this turns out to be.

  21. Ghiest says:

I foresee a mundane single player with a same old same old multi-player that is based off the IW 4.0 engine that was used in mw2.

  22. Magic H8 Ball says:

Yep, this thread wins it seems. It’s all-over-the-world whack-a-terro.

  23. Jimbob McNubbs says:

Is this Call of Duty 7, 8 or 9? I forgot to count them when they stopped putting numbers at the end of the title.
