Canadian Court upholds LTTE fund raising sentence

British Columbia’s highest court has rejected the Crown’s bid to overturn a six-month sentence given to a Vaughan man convicted of terrorist fund-raising. Prapaharan “Prapa” Thambithurai, 47, of Maple, was convicted and sentenced in B.C. in May for providing financial services, knowing they would benefit terrorist group known as the Tamil Tigers.

Swedish lass goes missing in SL

A 28-year-old Swedish girl has been reported missing during a trip to Sri Lanka, leaving only a Facebook social community network message to say that she had been robbed and beaten. Marie Jonsson Sillén from Vargarda in Vastergotland in central Sweden went missing in early March while on a holiday to the island of Sri Lanka. She was due to return to Sweden last Monday.

 

President to declare open Lakvijaya tomorrow

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will declare open Sri Lanka’s first coal power plant – Lakvijaya, at Norochcholai, in the Puttalam District at 5.30 p.m. tomorrow.

 

Special Indian train for Lankan pilgrims from Chennai

Indian Railways would launch a special Buddhist train, "Damba Diwa Vandana," later this year from Chennai to cater to Sri Lankan pilgrims, Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Ashok K. Kantha said in Kandy.  A large number of Buddhist pilgrims from Sri Lanka visited India and the train would be a cheaper mode of transportation for them.

 

Rs. 250m to promote living standards of North and East

The Ministry of Resettlement has allocated Rs. 250 million to promote the living standards of the people in the North and East. The Ministry expects to uplift the living standards of the people from this money and as well as to start small scale constructions in the area.

 

Average income of Sri Lankans up by 38%

INDIAN WELLS, California (AFP) – Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic won the ATP Indian Wells title, rallying to beat world No. 1 Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and improve his record this season to 18-0. Djokovic, who took over the No. 2 world ranking by beating Roger Federer in the semi-finals, on Sunday avenged a loss to Nadal in the 2007 Indian Wells final.

 

Total fish production to be increased to 685,690 metric tons

The Fisheries Ministry intends to increase the to 21.9 Kg by year 2013. The ministry has already directed the fisheries industry for sustainable maintenance through proper management by using modern technology in compliance with international marine laws and conventions.

Sri Lanka best net run rate among all 14 WC teams

Out of the 14 teams which competed in the first round of the ICC World Cup, Sri Lanka has registered the best net run rate of plus 2.582. Kumar Sangakkara and his men collected nine points with four wins, one loss and one no result to secure the second place in Group ‘A’ behind Pakistan which has ten points.

Gadhafi vows long war

More funds to end child labour
