What is the future for Syria? Truthloader LIVE debate

The war has been raging for more than two years now. Early in the conflict, during the height of the Arab Spring, the attention the conflict received was huge. As the conflict continued, interest waned as the initial simple narrative began to look ill fitting to reality.
Calls for dialogue from both sides of the conflict - for whatever reason - have continually failed to materialise. Dialogue is not happening in a constructive way inside Syria, but online there are a broad range of voices which come together peacefully. Truthloader is creating a platform to bring those voices together in a live debate on the 'Future for Syria' on Thursday the 16th of May at 7pm GMT/2pm EST/11am PST.

How afraid should we be of terrorism? Truthloader LIVE debate

There have been a number of attacks and attempted terrorist attacks on US soil since 9/11, but the Boston blasts are the first successful bombing in that time. However, during the same period, thousands have died from non-terrorist-related gun violence -- one estimate suggests a US citizen is 500 times more likely to die in a shooting than in a terrorist attack.
Is our fear of terrorism in the west disproportionate to the actual threat it poses? Or, is our heightened state of vigilance in fact what keeps us safe?

**Truthloader has had a response from the Westboro Baptist Church. The below is their statement in full**
There are two main reasons why anyone would be interested in labeling Westboro Baptist Church as a 'cult.'
1. Given its generally 'negative' connotation, calling a group a 'cult' acts as a sort of blanket 'ad hominem' argument against any and all positions the group has. Since the mainstream media is in a kind of slavish modality to the militant fag agenda, they aren't interested in any journalistic objectivity where WBC is concerned. The bottom line is, however, that we are a Bible-believing church -- perhaps the only one left in this evil world. The rest of this world's 'church's' are part of what we call 'lukewarm smorgasbord christianity' -- where you pick the dishes (words) you like, and don't put any other foods (words) on your plate. When you do that, you exalt your reasoning above God's -- so we tell you plainly -- that is a bad plan. So if you want to call WBC a 'cult,' then you will have to call the Lord Jesus Christ our 'charismatic leader.' We desire to live our lives in obedience to Christ, and to His blessed doctrine. We follow Him, and Him alone.
2. Most people are so abysmally Bible illiterate -- but that illiteracy rubs against a dull notion in one's conscience that he/she 'knows' the message of the bible -- because you've all heard syrupy, clap-trap nonsense spewed from the pulpits from the time you were little children -- and your parents didn't know much better (or care to know). All of this poisonous, man-pleasing doctrine will take your miserable souls to hell, but you've never heard anything different, so that's what you think 'Christianity' is. Enter WBC -- with bold, plain, sharp, ringing doctrine that is faithful to the scripture -- and it looks and sounds so foreign to you that you don't know how to take it. It sounds strange -- it sounds jarring -- it sounds...well, scary! We didn't make any of this stuff up -- we're just preaching what the Bible preaches. But your delicate sensibilities and the comfortable lukewarm religion most of you have settled into won't allow for any earnest investigation of these vital moral concepts. So you call us a 'cult' -- and the job of discounting our words is done neat and tidy -- and in short order. But you do that against your own eternal interests.

In its early days, YouTube was a place where people debated God endlessly. Some of the first big YouTube stars were atheists getting things off their chest. Pat Condell was an early riser on the YouTube ladder, and then of course there was The Amazing Atheist. Then there was the incredible growth of the /r/atheism on reddit, a place where people are debating God right now and it doesn't look like that debate is going to end anytime soon.
One issue at the heart of the great religious debate is morality. Religions often claim to be strongholds of morality -- the deep faith fostered by America's gospel churches gave strength to those fighting for the civil rights of black people and Ghandi's unwavering commitment to non-violent struggle was rooted in Hinduism and Buddhism.
But atheists have contested whether religion is a force for good. They point to seemingly endless wars justified in the name of god -- from the Crusades to modern Islamic terrorism -- and the on-going paedophile scandals in the Catholic Church seems to tie the priesthood to some of the most repellant crimes of all.
So do you have to be religious to be a good person? Does morality stem from religious scripture? Or is morality something we can define for ourselves without the help of religious institutions.

Why did WTC7 collapse? - Truthloader LIVE with Dr. Niels Harrit & Alien Scientist

World Trade Center 7 was a 47 storey building which collapsed at 5:20PM, hours after both World Trade Centre 1 and World Trade Centre 2 collapsed. It was not hit by a plane, but it did have fires burning on a number of floors.
Its collapse has caused a huge amount of controversy, especially online, where the tower's collapse is consistently brought up as a point of contention with comments such as "Investigate WTC7" appearing with incredible regularity.
There are two competing theories on why World Trade Center 7 collapsed, one is the NIST report from 2008 which argues the building collapsed due to fire weakening the structure of the building. Another theory is that incendiaries were used to destroy the structural strength of the building, and this theory comes from Architects and Engineers for 9/11 truth.
Why is this such an important issue for people? Because the latter theory implies that we haven't been told the whole truth about who was behind the attacks of September 11th, and that, if true, is kind of a big deal.

In September 2011 the Occupy movement set up in Zucotti Park in New York and their idea of disobedience became a global story. Though it was difficult to define the message of occupy, at the heart of it was a discontent for the status quo, it was a crying out for something NEW. A move away from a system that had put economic, political and social power in the hands of the wealthiest one per cent of the population, leaving everyone else feeling left out of the the process.
In the UK, voter turnout took a nosedive after the 1997 election, sure it's making a recovery but is it reasonable to assume that people are currently turned off of politics? The vibrancy of the occupy movement led people to ask some serious questions about the democracies we live in. Who does the system serve? Who writes the laws that govern us and who do they benefit?
The Internet has given us a glimpse of a world without power structures, with true freedom of expression, a place where everyone can feel like they're having an impact, they can be creative and seek out their own information. Is it possible that we could develop a system using the open access and free flowing principles of the internet to actually govern ourselves? It's an idea that people are seriously thinking about, there's of jolitics, a community and website experimenting with these ideas, there's the rise of internet politics in the Pirate Party, and there's Avaaz using crowdsourcing to huge political impact. Then of course there's Iceland, there is plenty of stuff going on in Iceland, where a brand new constitution was crowd-sourced all from the uncertainty that followed the financial crisis. One lady who is at the heart of those massive political changes in Iceland, and was also involved in Wikileaks, is Birgitta Jonsdottir, and she'll be joining us here on Truthloader for a live debate.

How do couples manage when one is HIV positive and the other isn't? - Truthloader LIVE debate

We held a LIVE debate discussing the relationships of 'mixed-status' couples. A 'mixed-status' couple means that one of them is HIV positive (HIV+) and the other isn't (HIV-).
We were joined by some guest speakers including a mixed-status couple as well as HIV positive activists, bloggers and a HIV documentary producer.

- Andrew McFarland Campbell -- HIV- with HIV+ partner, blogger at faithandpride.org and mcfarlandcampbell.co.uk.
- Miriam Bryce and husband, Anthony - Miriam is HIV+ while her husband is HIV- Miriam is also, like Richard, a spokesmodel for HIV Stops With Me.
- Louise Hulland- TV and Radio presenter, Louise produced an award-winning documentary for BBC on the rise of HIV in young people in the UK. Louise was a close friend of the British HIV campaigner Clint Walters, who died in 2010, and she works closely with various HIV charities to educate young people in Britain about HIV.

Following the tragic death of Aaron Swartz on Friday the 11th of January, we were prompted into a discussion about suicide.
At 7pm tonight, Truthloader will hold a LIVE discussion about this issue in our Google Hangout. We will have guest panelists and there will be room for you to have your say, so join us tonight at 7pm.
The moment you begin to look at the numbers, it's clear that something needs to be done, and yet we rarely hear of suicide discussed in an open and frank fashion. So here are the frank statistics. A recent study showed that suicide is now the leading cause of death by injury in the United States, overtaking car accidents in 2009. In the UK, suicide is the leading cause of death of men aged 15 to 35, bar none, outstripping violent crime and even road accidents.
One thing that is inescapable in the stats is the number of men who kill themselves. In the United Kingdom, 3.4 times as many men kill themselves as women. In the US, four times as many men kill themselves, and in Poland, the number is even higher at six times as many.
So why are so many young men killing themselves? Over the last decade there have been vast improvements to car safety because society recognised the number of deaths taking place on the roads, where is the same outcry over the staggering statistics that show that more people are killing themselves than dying in car accidents. What can we do to reverse this worrying trend?

What should we do with sex offenders? - Truthloader LIVE debate

The recent scandal in India has raised dozens of questions about attitudes to women in the developing country. There are many that have argued that punishment for sex offenders in the country have been far too lenient, and pressure is being put on the Indian authorities to act, to change the culture of India.
Is there a problem with attitudes towards women in India? Is there a problem with attitudes towards women in general? Are men being unfairly demonized?
What happened in India isn't isolated. Just a few weeks ago, the UK was embroiled in a fierce debate about the definitions of rape when Assange was wanted on sex offence charges. George Galloway added his opinion to the debate with the smallest amount of tact possible.
In America, Todd Akin made an incredibly ignorant comment about rape which was quickly criticized by just about everyone, but it goes to show just how many strange and controversial attitudes towards sex offenders exist out there in our world.
It's a debate which seems like it will rage on and on, and it's a debate we thought we'd have here at Truthloader.
