Mumbai has been a witness to some of the worst fire accidents.

The 1944 explosions of the freighter SS Fort Stikine killed around 800 people and 66 fire-fighters in two giant fire explosions and setting fire to the surrounding area. The freighter was carrying cotton bales, gold and ammunition, which also had nearly 1,400 tons of explosives. This large-scale destruction left nearly 80,000 people homeless and killed 71 fire-fighters in the aftermath.

On July 18, 2014, a fire broke at the 22-storey Lotus Business Park Building in Andheri West. The fire destroyed the two upper floors of the building before it was brought under control. On June 2, 2016, a major fire broke out at Metro House in Colaba Causeway. The Fire Brigade continued control operation for almost 2 days, with fire tenders making refill trips.

On November 9, 2017 a Monorail in Mumbai caught fire at the Mysore Colony station in the wee hours of 5:20 am. The fire broke out due to a short circuit and two bogies were badly damaged. No casualties were reported but the monorail service was affected and resumed only by the afternoon. The short circuit was reported in the breaking system.

Around four people, including two children, died and five were severely injured in a fire that broke out in a building in the Marol area. The fire broke out on the third floor of Maimoon building in the area at around 1.30 am. Of the nine people rescued, four have died and five others were immediately taken to a nearby hospital.

On August 22, 2018, a fire broke out in the Crystal Tower near Hindmata Cinema in Mumbai's Parel area. Four people have been reported dead in the fire and 14 others were rushed to hospital with injuries.
