- Stale-Dated/Uncashed Checks
A stale-dated federal treasury check is a check that has not been cashed within one year from the date of issue. The United States Department of Treasury automatically voids all uncashed checks after one year from the date of issue and returns the funds to the issuing agency. In accordance with 5 USC 552(a)(2), the above categories of records ("Reading Room records") are publicly available without the need for a FOIA request. Records known to have been published in the Federal Register in accordance with 5 USC 552(a)(1) are excluded. Only Reading Room records created on or after November 1, 1996 are required to be made available in an Electronic Reading Room; consequently, Reading Room records created by FAA prior to November 1, 1996 are not listed here.
