Coming Soon: Changes to How Tagging Works

Add tags to share more about the people you're with, the places you go and the things you do.

Add tags to share more about the people, places and things in your posts.

Tag people, places and things

Add tags to anything you post, including photos, updates and comments. Tags can point to your friends or anyone else on Facebook, along with the places you visit. Adding a tag creates a link that people can follow to learn more.

Tell people about stuff they're in

Add tags to let people know when they're in photos or other things you share. People you tag receive a notification so they can see your post. The post may also go on the person's profile and appear in their friends' news feeds.

Help tag things other people missed

You can tag other people's photos and posts to help them add details. Your name appears with the tag, so it's always clear where it came from. If you aren't friends with the person who owns the post (or if the owner has turned on Tag Review in their privacy settings), they'll be prompted to approve the tag before it gets added.

How do I remove a tag or report a post?

Removing and Reporting Tags

If you don't like a tag that someone adds, you have many options:
  1. Remove it from your profile. Your profile represents who you are, so you control what appears on it. You can even update your privacy settings to review things you're tagged in before they go on your profile.
  2. Remove the tag or report the post. You can easily:
    • Remove the tag. The post will still be on Facebook, but it will no longer link to your profile.
    • Send the owner of the post a message, asking to remove the post from Facebook.
    • Report a post to Facebook. If the post is abusive, it will be removed.
    • Block the owner of the post. All tags from this person will be removed, and you will no longer be able to see or interact with each other on Facebook.

If you’d like to review posts and photos you're tagged in before they go on your profile (timeline), turn on Profile (Timeline) Review. Click the account menu at the top right of any Facebook page and choose Privacy Settings > Manage How Tags Work > Change Settings > Profile (Timeline) Review.

If you have Profile (Timeline) Review off, then tags from friends are automatically approved. Whether you have Profile (Timeline) Review on or not, tags from nonfriends require your approval before they go on your profile (timeline).

If you want to untag yourself, use the Remove Tag option. For posts you're tagged in, Remove Tag is in the dropdown menu next to the post. For photos you're tagged in, click the Report/Remove tag link under the photo. Removing a tag unlinks your name from the post and also takes the post off your profile. The post will still be visible in other places unless the person who posted it takes it down.

If you don’t like something you’re tagged in, you can ask the person to take it down or escalate the issue:

  • Send a message to the person who tagged you asking them to take it down.
  • Block the person who tagged you, which removes the tag and prevents him or her from tagging or contacting you on Facebook.
  • If the post is abusive, please report it to us.

You can also remove a tag from your profile using the Remove From Profile option. For posts you're tagged in, that option is in the dropdown menu next to the post. For photos you're tagged in, just click Remove under the photo. Removing a tag from your profile means it won’t show on your profile anymore. If you’d like, you can turn on Profile Review to review and approve each tag before it goes on your profile.
