Is Iraq like Vietnam? Wrong question.

By mw | Related entries in Foreign Policy, Iraq, War

The real question is not “Is the 1975 Congressional cutoff of funds for Vietnam an appropriate historical lesson for 2007 Iraq?” The real question is “Can we trust the judgment of this President and this administration to understand/predict the consequences of any military decision or action in Iraq?”

“We’re Military People, But We’re People Too”

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Iraq, Video, War

Listening to this military wife talk about her husband and her military friends is heartbreaking. She calls for instituting the draft, but I’d suggest she consider supporting a shift in foreign policy strategy away from Bill Kristol’s view on pre-emptive wars.

Huckabee Gets Iowa Straw Poll Bounce

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election

Or could it be his message that’s resonating with social conservatives?
Maybe a little bit of both?
On the GOP side, Mitt Romney leads in Iowa and New Hampshire, while Rudy Giuliani is ahead in South Carolina. However, this biggest news is that Mike Huckabee got a bounce from his second place finish in the recent Ames [...]

Barack Obama, Ron Paul Lead Wikipedia Readership

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Technology

Interesting numbers because this is where Obama begins to show his grassroot chops against Hillary. He had 41,007 readers, compared with Hillary (the nearest Dem) at 18,555. That’s a massive gap.
What’s more interesting though, is Ron Paul would dominate the field with 30,960 readers but Fred Thompson is nipping at his heels with 24,160. Sure, [...]

Iraqi Police Being Rebuilt From The Ground Up

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Iraq, War

More reports out of Iraq, and the news isn’t particularly encouraging.
From NY Times:
WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 — An independent commission established by Congress to assess Iraq’s security forces will recommend remaking the 26,000-member national police force to purge it of corrupt officers and Shiite militants suspected of complicity in sectarian killings, administration and military officials said [...]

Save the GOP? Why?

By Pete Abel | Related entries in General Politics

Two days ago at The Carpetbagger Report, Steve Benen published a post re: the implosion of the Republican Party, writing:
… I often wonder how, exactly, someone looks at the Republican Party of 2007 — its leaders, its decisions, its priorities, its conduct — and says, ‘You know, that’s the party for me.’
When I read that [...]

Gay Marriage Coming To Iowa

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Law, Sexuality

That’s the ruling from a judge yesterday. He ruled that the ban on prohibiting gays from getting married is unconstitutional.
DES MOINES, Iowa – Less than two hours after a judge struck down Iowa’s decade-old gay marriage ban, two Des Moines men applied for a marriage license as bride and groom, and county officials said they [...]

Just click on each and it’ll lead you to their respective posts…

If Ron Paul doesn’t win the nomination, who will you vote for?

GAO: Very Little Progress In Iraq

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Foreign Policy, Iraq, Money, The World, War

The non-partisan Government Accountability Office will issue a report next Tuesday, but a draft of it has been given to the press for fear the full, unvarnished picture won’t be presented.
From the Wash Post:
The strikingly negative GAO draft, which will be delivered to Congress in final form on Tuesday, comes as the White House prepares [...]

More On Norman Hsu, Fugitive Donor

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Money

I promised I’d keep you all up to date, and so…
The biggest “new” news from this story in the NY Times is that:

He’s originally from Hong Kong.
Hsu was going to co-host a large Democratice fundraiser with Quincy Jones next month.
He’s donated $255,970 to Democrat candidates and causes.
He says that the whole “not showing up to [...]

Bush: “I Need About $50 Billion More…”

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Iraq, Legislation, Money, War

And he’s daring the Dems to vote against it…
The request — which would come on top of about $460 billion in the fiscal 2008 defense budget and $147 billion in a pending supplemental bill to fund the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq — is expected to be announced after congressional hearings scheduled for mid-September featuring [...]

Clinton Gives Back Fugitive Hsu’s Cash

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Money

Well done Hillary…
WASHINGTON (AP) – Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton will give to charity the $23,000 in donations she has received from a fundraiser who is wanted in California for failing to appear for sentencing on a 1991 grand theft charge.
The decision came Wednesday as other Democrats began distancing themselves from Norman Hsu, whose [...]

Republicans Brace For Larry Craig Fallout

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election

Found part of this quote over at Political Wire, and boy does it speak to the multiple credibility problems Republicans are facing in the upcoming election…
“The real question for Republicans in Washington is how low can you go, because we are approaching a level of ridiculousness. You can’t make this stuff up. And the impact [...]

Hillary Fundraising Update: Norman Hsu Is A Fugitive

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Money

The story is getting bigger…and weirder.
Yesterday I wrote about the Paws, a seemingly lower middle class family that inexplicably gave Hillary Clinton $45,000 in campaign contributions and over $200,000 to Dem causes.
Odd, right? Well, what’s even more suspect is that a fundraiser named Norman Hsu has previously claimed the family’s address as his place [...]

Should Larry Craig Have Been Arrested?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Law, Sexuality

That’s the question floating around the blogosphere today, and I think the people who’re asking it kind of have a point.
First, we have this from Volokh’s Larry Carpenter about Minnesota law:
From the arrest report, here’s what Craig allegedly did: (1) put a duffel bag at the front of his stall; (2) peered through a crack [...]

Hillary In Campaign Finance Scandal?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Hillary, Money

It appears as if the Wall Street Journal has dug up a blockbuster.
I’ll let them do the talking…
DALY CITY, Calif. — One of the biggest sources of political donations to Hillary Rodham Clinton is a tiny, lime-green bungalow that lies under the flight path from San Francisco International Airport.
Six members of the Paw family, each [...]

Michael Moore Gets…Michael Moore’d

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in The Politics Of Film

Manufacturing Dissent is a new documentary about Moore and his tendency to bend the truth to fit into his seemingly predetermined storylines.
The Daily Dish reports on what it’s all about…
The film was produced by two Canadian, self-described liberals, who began as fans of Moore’s movies but in the process of investigating his claims, came to [...]

Can A Dem Be Larry Craig’s Replacement?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, General Politics, Sexuality

Let’s just say Larry Craig resigns over this whole bathroom affair and Idaho has an election in 2008 to find a real replacement. Do Dems even have a shot in the traditionally hardcore conservative landscape of Idaho politics?
The Rothenberg Political Report says it’s highly unlikely. Why? because Craig was thinking of retiring anyway…leaving Repub Lt. [...]
