The Baikonur Cosmodrome
The Baikonur Cosmodrome is one of the and largest space launch facility, and one of the first ones in the world. It is situated in the desert steppes of Kazakhstan. The cosmodrome was built in the 50-ies in one of the most distant areas of the Soviet country, and now measures 90 kilometres east-west by 85 kilometres north-south. Sputnik 1, the Earth’s first artificial satellite lifted off the Baikonur. It goes without saying that most photos shot there were not for public use, still some workers managed to have a pic of it for their private collection. Kharkiv under the Nazi Occupation
Kharkiv as many other cities in the western part in the USSR was occupied by the Nazi army in the WWII. It was a big industrial and populated city in the Soviet Ukraine, and so it was very important for German army to have it as soon as possible.
Fremen Movement Is Against Sex-Tourism In Ukraine
Members of Femen women’s movement, mostly Ukrainian college students, came out against the growth of sex-tourism in the state. To attract interest on a national and international level they headed to Maidan Nezalezhnosti wearing revealing attires and carrying demonstration posters, which said “Ukrainian girls are not for sale!”

Russians believed that the world is full of spirits which live next to people, but can be very rarely seen by them. Usually, they were malicious creatures, but still they could help human beings and even protect them in dramatic situations. The spirits inhabited forests, lakes, fields and even houses, and if a person didn’t show respect or didn’t gain their favor by giving some things, they could get really angry, destroy the dwelling, kill the cattle or even murder him or her. The First Russian Submarine
The first submarine in Russia was constructed in 1834 by Carl Schilder, though there had been some attempts, not really successful ones, in the period of Peter’s rule. In 1832 Schilder was engaged in investigation of underwater behavior of galvanic mines to apply them in protection of the Russian ports, and right then he conceived the basic idea of creation a submarine that would be able to move under water, come close to an enemy ship and blow it up with a galvanic mine.
Povolzhye Famine
Soon after the Revolution hit Russia the political changes in the country and bad weather in the south of the state led to the Russian famine of 1921, which is better known as Povolzhye famine. It began in early spring in 21 and lasted through 1922, being the most severe thing that ever happened in Russia. More that 5 million people died during the year and a half, some of them passed away because they just had nothing to eat and some of them fell prey to their neighbors, parents or children. To survive in those terrible conditions people ate corpses of their family members, who were killed or just died of starvation. This period was very hard for the region, but it could not happen so, if the Soviet government hadn’t traded the grains to the other European countries, wanting to get more money for its industrialization purposes. Amber Room
The great Amber room appeared in Russia back in 1716 as a gift to Peter I from the King of Prussia Frederick William I. This way the head of the western country wanted to celebrate peace between his state and Russia and cementing their alliance against Sweden. The panels made of several tons of gorgeous gemstone, which are often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World, suffered a very unhappy fate – after more than two centuries of contented “life” in Russia they were stolen by Nazis during World War II and since that very time the original creation has been missing, though, by the 300 anniversary of St. Petersburg Russian craftsmen managed to restore the masterpiece, which is an exact copy of the stolen room.
