CBO Score: Bill Costs $940 Billion; Cuts Deficit By $130 Billion

The CBO score has landed!

The score finds that the fixed Senate bill will cost $940 billion over the next 10 years, a senior Democratic aide confirms.

It will cut the deficit by $130 billion in that time, the aide adds.

Ezra Klein notes that this means “more deficit reduction than either the House or Senate bill, and more coverage than the Senate bill.”

Bottom line: House Dems have no more excuses for indecision. Now we find out how — or whether — the House Dems who have said their vote all hinges on the score will factor it into their decision. More soon.

Update: More numbers from a second Dem source:

* It cuts the deficit by $1.2 trillion in the second ten years.

* It reduces annual growth in Medicare expenditures by 1.4 percentage points per year.

* Expands coverage to 32 million Americans.

A third Dem source exults that this is the “biggest deficit reduction measure since the 1993 Clinton budget.”

Way to go Obama and Democrats. You did it!

    @tpm:

House Majority Whip James Clyburn told reporters just now that the Democrats are “absolutely giddy” over the CBO scores that were released this morning. The scores are “great news for the American people,” he said.

Unfortunate probably didn’t believe that Clinton could pay off the deficit either when he announced it and the Republicans were against it at first.

At some point the Republican voters are going to have to admit that their party spends like drunk sailors and the Democrats fix the deficit the Repubicans created.

Scuse me, but today just got even BETTER:

    @politicalwire:

Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) “is in the crosshairs of a Department of Justice criminal investigation,” KLAS-TV reports.

“The criminal probe stems from a romantic affair Ensign had with the wife of his key staffer and close friend, Doug Hampton, and what Ensign has done to help Hampton financially.”

    Key words, folks:

    CRIMINAL PROBE.

  25. The BBQ Chicken Madness | March 18th, 2010 at 10:21 am

Speaking of Clinton’s budget back in 1993, an Op-Ed was written in WaPo today from the Congresswoman who cast the deciding vote FOR that that budget, and lost her seat because of it. She never tells them how to vote, but I think it’s clear she believes they should be casting their votes in the ‘aye’ column, scr*w the politics.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/17/AR2010031701496.html

    Her bottom line:

“Simply put, you could be Margolies-Mezvinskied whether you vote with or against President Obama. You will be assailed no matter how you vote this week. And this job isn’t supposed to be easy. So cast the vote that you won’t regret in 18 years.”

    and

“I urge you simply to cast the vote you can be proud of next week, next year and for years to come. Given the opportunity, I wouldn’t change my vote.”

  26. unfortunate | March 18th, 2010 at 10:22 am

Thank God They’re going to vote or “deem” it thru, DEEM like a King deems things. Can’t wait for the backpeddling and finger pointing when the Dems are called on this. This election is gonna be sweet. Good bye ruling class Dems, or maybe they will deem that we don’t have a say anymore, and will be happy with what we get, and like it.

  27. The BBQ Chicken Madness | March 18th, 2010 at 10:23 am

“God I’m in a good mood”

    and

“I cannot in my wildest dreams imagine that they could work up this much excitement and then NOT pass it.”

Don’t get overconfident. Not only does the House have to pass this bill, then the fixes have to get through the Senate. This isn’t done, and if there’s something that Democrats are known far and wide for, it’s fumbling the ball right at the goal line.

I hope everyone is still making calls. This Sunday we may see it pass the House, a huge step. Then next week it’s all about getting the fixes through the Senate…

  28. Paul W. | March 18th, 2010 at 10:24 am

On behalf of progressives everywhere I say, “Nevermind that! Let’s put this bill down and design an even BETTER one in the next Congress!”

  29. Ethan | March 18th, 2010 at 10:25 am

unfortunate, what’s your take on the criminal probe of Republicans sitting Senator John Ensign?

    Should he resign?

Or is the Senate working so well as is, that a criminal probe of a sitting member by the FBI and DOJ won’t harm the atmosphere of comity and cooperation?

  30. SD Jeff | March 18th, 2010 at 10:25 am

Debra, Rush Limbaugh specifically guaranteed, GUARANTEED, the deficit would go down as a result of that proposal. Every republican voted no. And for the first time, like forever, we started paying down the national debt.

Now is the time to let all Democratic Reps. know that a vote against the Bill, is a vote to take down a Democratic President, and we will not tolerate any Traitors in the Party.

Let those who are even hinting about not supporting this bill know, that if they vote against it, we will drive them from office, even if we have to vote for their Republican opponents. Make sure that they get that message. Leave no doubt in their minds that we will not allow them to stay in the party, if they vote to cripple this President.

  45. Ethan | March 18th, 2010 at 10:37 am

Btw, really interesting comment last night on Hardball. Matthews had Ron Brownstein on and they were discussing comprehensive HCR versus piece-by-piece approach. Matthews suggested, like he often does, that when the GOP had power they never tried HCR. Brownstein noted that indeed they DID try to bring some incremental reform proposals to the table but they were so poor that they didn’t even get out of committee, so we never heard about it.

And that the only way to do HCR is comprehensively with a Dem Congress and a popular Dem President in his/her first year of his/her first term.

That is specifically how he said it too. So it really is a moment of utter alignment for the forces of good that allows us to witness this history unfold.

  46. homerhk | March 18th, 2010 at 10:37 am

Seriously, anyone here doubt the man in the hot seat? They guy knows his **** and in combination with wunderkind orzag, was there really any doubt that the cbo would say that the Pres’s proposal would reduce the deficit?

    Women Of America,

Congressman Stupak’s condescending, and dismissive attitude, toward the opinion of The Catholic Nuns, coupled with his efforts to interfer with the constitutional reproductive rights of woman, shows that he is an absolute misogynist.

The fact that he admits that he will only be guided by a group of allegedly celibate men, on Women’s Reproductive Health issues, is appalling.

Take him down. Kick him out of office. EMILY him.

Hold on a minute, Cochise…what “fixed”? The “fix” is NOT “in”. You dummies just have to trust…the Senate.

There ain’t no fix until this thing comes back from the veterinary clinic, m’boy!

And now that THAT little moonbat hallucination is put out of the way, let’s all remember that the CBO is likely predicating the scoring of this bill on a, shall we say, particularly rosy outlook on the future performance of the economy?

The fact is that Socialist UtopiaCare is going to knee the economy right in the gazoolies,(what with “mandates” and all…however much Bobo will have to cough up fort his mandated health coverage will not be available for his DirectTV, his cell phone or his car note bills.

When the economy stops swirling around the bottom and actually goes down the poop-pipe at the bottom of the bowl…well:

    “Hell-O deficits!”

Because demands on health care services will increase, thanks to the Baby-boomers, while revenues from taxes will be deacreased, thanks to the Obamaconomy.

Oh…and in case y’all were wondering, at least two states have already made plans to challenge the Constitutionality of this thing the very minute,(if ever), that the Alleged Hawaiian scrawls his name on it.

Gee, one would have thought that the Iraq War being the 21st century equivalent of WWII and all, the Repugs wouldnn’t have tried to hide the cost by running it off the books, ya know? I mean, it was such a patriotic undertaking and all.

And given that it was, one would have thought the all those Executive Orders Commander Coocoo Bananas issued in conjunction with the invasion, could have been the subjects of actual legislation in Congress with actual hearings and discussions of the subject matter.

And one would have thought that if waterboarding was so damn effective and AMerican, they wouldn’t have tried to hide it for so long…

dude you just opened the door to al, being brought up.

  85. Tena | March 18th, 2010 at 11:31 am

    sheeit =

dude, you just opened the door to all kinds of evidence being brought up that you didn’t want brought up.

Were is talk of tort reform? Were is nation wide competition? How without single payer are we going to eliminate preexisting conditions? I know most lefties end game is single payer got that, but how to pay for it? How about we get our economy back running and then we “fix” health care? OH right that would be missing a crisis that we can take advantge of , right Rohm. Mother Government can not “pay” for all of us . It’s that simple.

  87. unfortunate | March 18th, 2010 at 11:37 am

Edit where is and where is . sorry for the spelling error I know how that drives all the intelectuals nuts.

  88. unfortunate | March 18th, 2010 at 11:40 am

Oh sorry Tena I didn’t clearify, Yeah Bush was really not my idea of a great conservative…. so, let’s talk about what is going on now k?

  89. af | March 18th, 2010 at 11:41 am

Wait until it’s passed and signed before celebrating.

  90. unfortunate | March 18th, 2010 at 11:42 am

Liam Idiot troll blah blah blah. I beat you to it.

  91. af | March 18th, 2010 at 11:45 am

You’ve got to love modern manufacturing when it’s cheaper to buy a whole new computer than replace a simple, generic component like a speaker.

  92. Bilgeman | March 18th, 2010 at 11:48 am

    unfortunate:
“Liam Idiot troll blah blah blah”

    Liam’s an “idiot” now?

When did he get the brain transplant?

Hey Liam, congrats on the promotion! Did you get a snazzy new drool-bib to go with the corner cell in the asylum?

  93. SD Jeff | March 18th, 2010 at 12:07 pm

    “Welcome to the Slum Line.

Par for the course in this sweat lodge of moonbats.”

Bilgeman why do waste your time here? Nobody likes you. You add nothing to the conversation. You have no facts. You have no intention of having a serious debate. You honestly have NOTHING better to do with your life? Do you even work?

If you want to engage in a serious debate without constantly hypocritically contradicting yourself, I’m ready.

  94. Bilgeman | March 18th, 2010 at 12:20 pm

    SD Jeff:
“Bilgeman why do waste your time here? Nobody likes you.”

Let’s see if you canm wrap your mind around a concept that is alien to a moonbat:

I don’t WANT to be liked by you people. I don’t LIKE you people.

Can you grokk that, man? I’m not here to win a popularity contest…because I would be ashamed to carry an endorsement from the likes of you.

Rather like being elected “Employee of the Month” by the Dachau Concentration Camp Guards’ Union, see?

    I don’t want your trophy.

“If you want to engage in a serious debate without constantly hypocritically contradicting yourself, I’m ready.”

You may be ready, but you’re not capable.

  95. Tena | March 18th, 2010 at 12:27 pm

“Oh sorry Tena I didn’t clearify, Yeah Bush was really not my idea of a great conservative…. so, let’s talk about what is going on now k?”

    No.

Y’all don’t get to cop out with the “I wasn’t a Nazi,” defense.

The conservatives have to own George W Bush and his legacy.

  96. beyond left | March 18th, 2010 at 12:36 pm

A friendly warning: Don’t feed the trolls!
Not an original thought in any of the posts from bilgey, unfortunate (ironic name no?), etc., just the same empty threats about November and recycled wingnut talking points. They are desperate, desperate to say or do something derail the bill’s passage. My particular favorite is that its the dumbocrats fault that this didn’t pass last August, when senate repiglicans were the ones actually holding up the bill through bad faith bargaining and then outright, blatant, partisan obstruction. It would be amusing if we hadn’t wasted 6 months for no particular reason except for repiglicans having a hissy fit because they couldn’t stop the bill outright. First runner up is, complaints about house procedures that repiglicans made almost routine when they controlled the house. For the bronze, complaining about back room deals after the way repiglicans held a vote open for 3 hours while the hammer bribed and threatened his troops to change their votes for medicare part d, which by the way WASN’T PAID FOR, JUST LIKE THE TWO REPIGLICAN WARS WEREN’T PAID FOR. Honorable mention goes to the argument that you can’t trust the CBO score that shows the plan is not only paid for but reduces the deficit. Hypocrite is to mild a term.

  97. SD Jeff | March 18th, 2010 at 12:44 pm

You didn’t answer my question. You only reiterated what I already told you which is no one likes you. And I know you don’t care about that. You remind me of this little annoying 1st grader at my kids school who hangs around with the bigger kids, poking them and making annoying sounds because no one else will play with him.

I asked you why you bother coming here. You have no answer because you know you have nothing better to do. I assume most of the people here are either unemployed or just check the net from work. Personally, I’m self employed and work at home and have to be ready to receive emails for new projects so I have to be on my computer even when I’m not actually working. What’s your excuse?

I offer to debate you and you ducked. Big surprise.

  98. SD Jeff | March 18th, 2010 at 12:47 pm

beyond left, you nailed it. Their blatant refusal to acknowledge their rampant hypocrisy prevents any honest debate from even occurring.

  99. Debra | March 18th, 2010 at 01:07 pm

@Tena “The conservatives have to own George W Bush and his legacy”

Exactly. They elected him twice, but now they are claiming they had nothing to do with his disasterous presidency and the ruin he left our country in. And somehow they still believe they know what’s best for the country.

  100. Aaron | March 18th, 2010 at 02:04 pm

Funny stuff. Funny funny stuff. Amazing how this bill costs under a trillion dollars in ten years. Go Dems! Oh yeah, that’s right, they don’t spend for the first four. Let me go budget my household that way and get back to you.

CBO is non partisan, but always remember, garbage in, garbage out.

  101. Richard H. Serlin | March 18th, 2010 at 05:59 pm

“It cuts the deficit by $1.2 trillion in the second ten years.”

Oh, that’s not much, no big deal, not worth a lot of media focus, let’s talk about reconciliation instead which is just used regularly and a lot more by Republicans.

  102. Jeff Johnson | March 18th, 2010 at 09:55 pm

For all of you folks who believe the CBO numbers or that the gubmunt is going to save us all a bunch of money, please contact me, I have some ocean front property in Arizona I would like to sell you.

  103. rick g | March 19th, 2010 at 12:11 pm

“Unfortunately for unfortunate, the CBO is going to be the final authority on this.”

Unfortunately for America real deficits, job losses, and reduced freedom, will be the final authority.
