Mullen finds ‘little resistance’ among troops to repealing DADT.
While opponents of allowing gay men and women to serve openly in the military often talk about the effect that it will have on troop morale and cohesion, McClatchy reports that at a recent forum with Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen in Jordan, there was “little resistance” to repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell from the servicemembers:
As it turned out, none of the two dozen or so men or women who met with Mullen at Marine House in the Jordanian capital Tuesday had any questions on the 17-year-old policy that bars gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military — or Mullen’s public advocacy of its repeal.
Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Darryl E. Robinson, who’s the operations coordinator for defense attache’s office at the U.S. Embassy here, explained why after the session. “The U.S. military was always at the forefront of social change,” he said. “We didn’t wait for laws to change.”
Mullen later said that since his Capitol Hill testimony on the need to repeal DADT, he hasn’t had a single servicemember raise the issue with him in the three town hall sessions he’s held. Troops told McClatchy that the policy change wasn’t a big issue because they’ve “already served with gays and lesbians, they accepted that some kind of change was imminent, and, they said, the nation was too engulfed in two wars for a prolonged debate about it.”

Exactly. Servicemembers are professionals. They do what they have to do to complete the mission. They see that gays and lesbians can do their job just as well as (if not better than) straights. If they contribute to unit cohesion, then they are accepted. What they do on their off-time is nobody’s business but their own.

Active duty myself and can tell you the repeal of the DADT won’t be a big deal. We’ve worked with gays and lesbians all along. So while those outside the military (namely, politicians) may see this as some huge, earth-shattering change, we in the military don’t.

They seem to think that once homosexuality is accepted as just another part of every day life that God will cause the US to crumble. BS! Strange, when righties make grand claims like “liberals are fascists” but they never provide evidence or show us how they connect the dots from point A to point B. Not that it matters though because that’s a serious history fail right there.
I’m not sure why all the American right-wingers seem to hate “fascism” so much. They have so much in common with the nazi’s:

*Civil rights as objectionable because they conflict with “security” concerns; “we” must be protected from “them”, so anyone who challenges “security” measures must be one of “them”

You guys aren’t getting it. It’s not about reality. It’s emotional response.
Anything bad they can think of can be applied to lefties, whether it makes sense or not.
They all still relate to the emotion.
They have no facts so this is what they are left with.

Even scarier is when they vote often times emotion wins out over logic and when laws are passed…..and the rest of America pays the price: like the “Marriage”/anti-gay Amendments/Laws or how the right attacks the separation of church and state by telling their more emotional voters their religion is “under attack” whenever a church/state issue comes up. “They’re trying to take religion out of the public square!” And of course foreign policy and the right labels the left as being pro-terrorism or soft on terrorism. And the right wing uses fear to get people to support their agenda. A lot of ‘04 Bush/Cheney votes were based solely on fear. Fear is a powerful emotion, and in 2004 it overcame the logic of many people.
Know your enemy. Most of these people live and make all their decisions based on faith.
Politics is freely preached in the church pulpit. They are told that god hates progressives.
When they got it to the point that they could get away with that then the indocrination by coersion of the rest of the membership was easy.
These people believe. that’s all they need. Facts don’t even enter into the picture and they will rationalize anything wrong that the right does.

Aint that the truth? Simply look at the stances of the anti-gay “c”hristians who post at TP! They claim to use the Bible as their justification for being anti-gay, but ignore any and all other Biblical verses that don’t support their prejudices!

A good first step would be a law that makes proselytizing in the halls of power illegal. Anyone who quotes the Bible or invokes the name of God/Jebus as justification for law should be immediately dragged out of the House or Senate chamber. Their seats could either be forfeited until the next general election or we could go with the recall special election route. So long as a significant minority of lawmakers are beholden to an old myth? We are pretty much doomed to fail in a modern world.
