WellPoint Failed To Deliver Tens Of Millions Of Dollars It Promised To Help Uninsured Americans

wellpointer Health insurance companies have always claimed that they support “affordable, high-quality health care for every American” and are supportive of health care reform efforts and not simply concerned with their profits. To try to project this image of compassion for the uninsured, WellPoint Inc. — which recently came under fire for planning double-digit rate hikes in at least eleven states — pledged three years ago to use its charitable foundation to spend $30 million to assist the uninsured receive care.

A new investigative report by the Los Angeles Times finds that WellPoint’s foundation has completely failed to meet its promise of spending $30 million to help the uninsured. Rather, the company spent $6.2 million — a paltry 11 percent of what the company promised:

WellPoint’s public records indicate that from 2007 to 2009 the foundation gave less than $6.2 million in grants targeted specifically at helping uninsured Americans get access to coverage and care — barely one-fifth of what was promised and just 11% of the charity’s total giving over the last three years.

“It was just not something that the company really wanted to do,” said one former executive, who, like others interviewed for this story, asked not to be identified out of concern that discussing WellPoint could have adverse career consequences. “So it went by the wayside.”

The Times created a graph that charts WellPoint’s charitable giving since 2007 and showed how little of the insurers’ charitable spending actually went to helping the uninsured:

52794073

An investigation by Congress earlier this year found that WellPoint’s Chief Executive Angela F. Braly had a salary of $1.1 million last year and stock options valuing approximately $8.5 million, meaning that the company couldn’t spend anywhere near what it spends on just one of its own employees to help the uninsured it claims to care about.

Just more proof that the insurance companies are a bunch of friggin’ crooks:

    1) They provide a service which costs $0 to provide until you actually need it.

    2) They fight you if you ever try to use their service and actually ask for money from them.

    3) If you do manage to make them pay you, then they will just increase your rates to make that money back (and more) in a short amount of time.

    4) They use the money you gave them to lobby politicians (who are also crooks) into making it illegal not to pay the insurance companies to do nothing. Brilliant!

They sound like the mob, only more organized and they have the law on their side. Every month I pay “for their protection.” I seriously feel for the people being screwed by these crooks…this was like the insurance companies crooks on spit right in the face of the uninsured (more than they usually do).

Well, well, well wellpoint. You’ve got some explaining to do.

  9. Pilotshark Sponsored by Boeing says:

Well they helped the uninsured, by making sure that there is a larger amount of them so they have a better rates in a exchange.

?? Didn’t this individual claim to be working on a bridge project in Pennsylvania? Who does this individual think is funding that project (assuming it exists)? Who funds his wages? What value will a bridge have to the local economy?

Only on here can an organization that gave $54.6 million over the past 3 years get bashed as totally evil.

GRANTED, they should do what they SAY they are going to do. Not following through on a promise is bad. I applaud their giving, but they should have follow-through.

AGAIN, your name belies the fact you are an apologist not only for the corporate abuses that they perpetrate on us…

Clearly a waste of money taken from taxpayers to create a government roadway with no return on investment. I travel the completed portion of the road which connects rt 51 to rt 79 and in 20 miles,I might see a dozen cars during that stretch. It’s10 years old and no one uses it. But the upkeep is enormous. Thats why the state is trying to sell it to a private company(along with I 80) to get out of the finincial burden. No one wastes Gov funds like the Feds. I’m not saying it doesnt provide a small boost, but the costs always outweigh the gains.

“Always”? Clearly you don’t know much about roads and bridges, or the effect on the economy when they fail. Ever hear of trucks?

iw, things were ok for the first 4 years of GWB? Have you completely forgotten about 9/11?

Clinton should have done more after the first WTC, the Cole , the Embassies, Somalia, etc. He should have taken Bin Laden when he was offered to him.9/11 Wiped out our most major finincial district, yet things turned around quite rapidly with his policies, which were approved by,gasp, Hillary, Kerry, and most of the Dems(including the Iraq invasion). Fannie and Freddie caused this latest finincial meltdown because banks were forced to loan money that could never be payed back. F&F took on those debts by fed regulations. Then they imploded. Another Gov entity out for the GOOD of the people. It seems that you are the one who forgot about 9/11. And if you think he was complicit in the attacks, thats the end of the conversation.

And they are all falling apart. We cant even keep up with existing infrastructure. Lets fix that first. How many bridges must collapse before we decide to fix them?

iw, I won’t defend Clinton. I didn’t vote for him. I won’t blame everything on Bush either but I won’t ignore the pisspoor manner in which the neocons bastardized our country long before Obama became president. If Clinton should have gone after OBL harder because of the first bombings at the WTC then Bush should never, I repete, never taken his eyes off of OBL. But he did and spent billions of unaccounted for dollars and thousands of lives invading and occupying a country that had nothing to do with OBL. So if you want to stay on your Freddie and Fannie kick that has the fingerprints of both sides of the aisle, go ahead. Ignore tax cuts for the rich, ignore the billions blown in Iraq, forget about the divulging of a secret agent by the Bush administration. I’m not trying to change your mind. If you don’t want to look at more than just what agrees with you, fine. But don’t expect me to swallow your myopic view as gospel.

  222. hellinabucket says:

iw, in addition to that. Watch where you step when you say it’s seems that I have forgotten about 9/11. I lost several friends that day in both NYC and at the Pentagon and won’t stand to have my memory or respect for that day lessened by anyone.

I don’t claim to walk in your shoes so don’t claim to walk in mine. I won’t think for you and don’t allow yourself the easy strawman of claiming to think for me. Understood?

Suddenly they’ve become prudent, after losing both Houses, and the presidency. Amazing what a year in the political wilderness will do, to refresh one’s memory. But the ship has already sailed on the “conservatism = fiscal responsibility” scam. Good luck trying to sell that, after supporting a trillion dollar war.

Uh, yes, well that was exactly my point. Those are the sorts of “government projects” that contribute enormously to the economy.

It’s a bit disingenous to compare what Wellpoint’s Foundation gave out in grants vs. what their for-profit company paid execs. If you look at the Wellpoint Foundation website, you’ll see they gave lots to disaster recovery. Foundations are required to give away a certain percentage of their money every year, and it looks like they did that. Are their execs paid too much? Most certainly. Do they gouge customers? Yes. Should they allowed to be able to charge the prices they do? No.
