Sega Genesis retrospective book turns to Kickstarter for funding - http://www.polygon.com/2013/11/11/5090912/sega-genesis-retrospective-book-turns-to-kickstarter-for-funding

Sega Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works, a "documentary art book" chronicling the creation and full history of Sega's classic home console and its iconic software, has turned to Kickstarter to seek funding.

The book, which is officially licensed by Sega and is being produced by gaming-centric publishing outlet Read-Only Memory, spans 300 pages, contains over 20 interviews with former Sega team members, and contains art inspired by tons of classic titles from the console. Featured titles include hits like Phantasy Star, Gunstar Heroes and Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as lesser-known games like Vectorman and Rent-a-Hero.

Ubisoft hopes to reignite love for classic JRPG mechanics with Child of Light - http://www.polygon.com/2013/11/11/5091300/ubisoft-hopes-to-reignite-love-for-classic-jrpgs-with-child-of-light

Child of Light, Ubisoft's fairytale Japanese-style role-playing game, utilizes a combat system grounded in traditional, classic mechanics of the genre but with a twist that rewards clever thinking over button-pushing dexterity, game writer Jeffrey Yohalem told Polygon.

Playing as pink-haired Aurora while Yohalem controlled her sidekick, the floating spark Igniculus, I floated through the caves, sneaking up on enemies and engaging them in combat.

The birth of Xbox Live - http://www.polygon.com/features/2013/11/11/4849940/xbox-live-millennium-e

There was a dream that was a box.

Part sci-fi, part nostalgia, this box would unite people from around the world and provide a platform for entertainment that would drive the future. In young computer scientist J Allard's dream, this box would change the world.

The dream started with an early 1980s television commercial for the Atari 2600. In it, entire families huddle around a plastic-and-wood-grain machine, playing versions of popular arcade games, cheering, laughing and stopping to stare in awe. It was a ludicrous and obnoxious marketing vision and it sold those plastic-and-wood-grain machines by the truckload. Its message: People unite through play.

But it was still first. This article claims that the Xbox was first, which is incorrect.

A small team within Blizzard Entertainment is working to bring the original Warcraft real-time strategy games — Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness — to modern PCs, according to World of Warcraft production director J. Allen Brack.

How to design a plague - http://www.polygon.com/features/2013/11/10/4864278/plague-inc-james-vaughan

In 2009, Malcolm Casadaban checked himself into a hospital after contracting the plague in urban Chicago, Illinois.

Casadaban's daughters say the active 60 year-old professor at the University of Chicago was in good health in the period leading up to the illness.

His death 12 hours later rocked a dumbfounded medical community. A professor of molecular genetics, he was researching a chain of events that happens once a person is made sick by a form of plague bacterium called Yersinia Pestis. At some point in his experiments he became exposed to a weakened strain that entered his blood. The university was put into lock-down.
