This course is designed to help you acquire new problem-solving skills in business and technology. We will explore and apply systematic methods for discovering, analyzing, and solving high-value problems. We will also learn how to integrate the systematic approach to invention and innovation with Design Thinking, Agile design, and Lean Startup methods.

Some of the biggest problems facing today’s entrepreneurs, technologists, and business people require solutions that do away with the status quo. They require breakthrough innovation that makes existing approaches obsolete. In this course, we will set out to identify problems whose solutions create new systems, establish new processes, and set new agendas. Throughout, we will learn how to recognize such high-value problems and convert them into scalable solutions. Specifically, we will study advanced brainstorming methods, practice using tools for solving the “innovator’s dilemma,” and generate testable hypotheses for Lean startups. In addition, we will see how to avoid typical mistakes that doom to failure innovation efforts of startups and established companies. The course will culminate in an invention workshop where participants will practice their newly learned skills to solve real-life problems. The course is intended for inventors, entrepreneurs, R&D managers, and IP professionals in high tech industries. Whether you are a novice or a veteran, you will acquire an arsenal of creative tools for idea development and innovation.
