WordPress is the most popular blog and content management system on the market today. Some of the most frequented websites run on WordPress, a free, open-source platform. While HTML, CSS, and PHP skills are still critical to the creation and implementation of top-notch websites, content management systems such as WordPress simplify the process. In this hands-on course, students will learn how to install, create, and configure a WordPress site. We will cover an overview of content management systems in general (and WordPress in particular), setting up and configuring a web server to allow WordPress to work (including setting up
a MySQL database), downloading and installing a WordPress instance, and creating content. We will also discuss editing content, assigning categories and tags, managing widgets, implementing and modifying themes, and adding plugins to enhance productivity and functionality. By the end of the course, students will have built a functional WordPress site.
Students should have a basic understanding of HTML and CSS. Students are encouraged to take “Beginning Website Design” (CS 21) either concurrently or before enrolling in this course.
Students are required to bring a laptop computer to class. Students will also have the option to purchase electronic reference materials for $40. The instructor will discuss how to access the materials on the first night of class.
