While many forms of dispute resolution focus on winning for your side, mediation seeks a win-win for both sides. Distinct from negotiation, mediation involves a neutral third party and a defined process. Whether you are a professional who assists parties in conflict or an individual or manager encountering conflict, understanding mediation and how it works can sharpen your conflict resolution skills.

This workshop covers mediation principles and processes, mediator roles, conflict styles, managing difficult conversations, constructively framing issues, and creative problem-solving. You will observe and participate in mock mediations (using familiar scenarios) in a highly interactive setting. We will survey major approaches to mediation but emphasize transformative mediation, which seeks both conflict resolution and the parties’ shift toward mutual recognition and empowerment—with the potential for the parties and their relationship to be transformed. The workshop will provide concrete tools that can be used to address major life decisions involving your work, marriage, family, or community.

Continuing Legal Education credit hours are available for this course (seven credit hours of MCLE). The course also meets the qualifications for seven hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs, and LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (PCE 5184).

Due to its short format, this workshop may not be taken for a Letter Grade, and it is not eligible for standard Continuing Education Units (CEU).
