You’ve finished a draft of your short story or novel. You know that it takes many drafts to reach a final product. But how do you move from one draft to the next? How do you dig deeper, flesh out your characters, and discover new scenes? How do you improve the quality of your prose? (Here’s a hint from Elmore Leonard: “If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.”)

In this one-day workshop, you will work through a series of exercises to help improve your fiction and strengthen your revision skills. Bring an early draft of a story or novel chapter that you know needs work—you’ll dive in and discover how to turn it into a stronger piece of fiction. We will examine plot, point of view, and character development, and consider the ways these elements of craft can be improved. Have you chosen the best way to open the story and the best way to end the story? When is the rewriting process over and the story ready for prime time? In the end, you will learn how to apply these skills to all of your future writing.

Due to its short format, this workshop may not be taken for Credit or a Letter Grade.
