Green lighting process

Here’s the best process to follow if you want a course greenlit at the d.school.

1. Well before the course proposal deadline date, familiarize yourself with the d.school, the courses we teach, and our space.

2. Concretize your ideas, form a diverse teaching team and prepare a draft proposal of a course you’re interested in teaching. Note that we never greenlight a new full-quarter class unless it has been taught as a Pop-Up first, so keep that in mind when building your draft. Pop-ups need to be tightly scoped.

3. Visit us during office hours well before the course proposal deadline. This is required. We don’t greenlight courses from new teams that we haven’t met. Bring both your draft class proposal as well as a detailed course arc and plan with you for feedback. It’s very helpful to have something specific to respond to versus general ideas.

4. Iterate on your course, and be prepared to share the experiences you’ll create for students.

CLASS TIME CHANGES:
It is an attempt to reduce overlapping and conflicting time slots for courses, and was unanimously approved by the Stanford Faculty Senate. I don’t know how often that occurs, but this change is definitely happening!

These changes will affect every full-quarter class currently taught at the d.school(and in general, across the university). Please make sure you read this email fully and take these new times into account when you next propose your course. (Pop-up classes will not be affected since they are not credit bearing.)

Class Duration
Classes can now be 50 minutes, 80 minutes, or can be combined blocks of 50 and 80 to get to 2 or 3 hour time slots (if start time matches below).

Class Start Times
50-minute classes may be taught on MWF, MW, WF, or MF, and may begin at 8:309:30,10:3011:30, 12:30, 1:302:303:304:30, 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30.
80-minute classes (which used to be 75-minute and 90-minute classes) may be taught on TTh mornings, and may begin at 9:0010:30, and 12:00, or on TTh, MWF, MW, WF, or MF afternoons, and may begin at 1:303:004:306:00, and 7:30.

What About Longer Classes?
110-minute classes may use two of the MWF, MW, WF, or MF 50-minute time slots.
170-minute classes meeting one day per week may use any three of the 50-minute slots, or any two of the 80-minute slots.

Miscellaneous Advice
There is a suggestion that undergraduate courses be kept to the morning and early afternoon to accommodate the fairly large population of athletes. Graduate courses work at any time.
