First-year teachers, hospital patients, disaster survivors, homeless people – how do you design for people who have a hard time offering critical feedback? Whether overwhelmed, convinced ‘the expert’ knows best or just plain weary, some individuals struggle to express their distinct viewpoints. How can we as designers modify our usual methods for empathy, prototyping and testing in these scenarios?

This course brings together a small group of students already familiar with the basics of design thinking with expert guests who have experience working with this users under duress. We’ll go into the field to create new design tools, then use class time together to unpack what works and what doesn’t. The class will collaboratively produce and publish a corresponding artifact to help teach others the same methods we discuss in class.
