Would you lend a friend your high school yearbook, rent out your bed to a stranger, sell your leftovers from dinner?
This five-week intensive takes students through the design challenges underpinning the “sharing economy” – where traditional ownership is replaced by peer-to-peer sharing, lending, renting, gifting, and borrowing of things.
This advanced class builds on previous d.school experience, diving deep into the empathy tool. We will use empathy to understand material ownership, generosity, safety, and trust within communities. Students should be prepared to be vulnerable in understanding their own practices and motives before engaging with extreme user groups (e.g., hoarders, tight-knit religious communities). This is real research! Each week, students will conduct ethnographic interviews and observations outside of class, which will feed directly into a publication on the sharing economy.
From a foundation of deep empathy, student teams will prototype scalable interventions for an existing sharing community.
