The application period for the 2015-16 JSK Fellowships is now closed.  Your next opportunity to apply for a JSK Fellowship is in the fall of 2015 when online applications for the 2016-17 fellowships open:

Deadline: 11:59 p.m., December 1, 2015, Pacific Standard Time.
Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

In the meantime, here is an overview of the application process.

In addition to some basic information about you, your professional experience and a few examples of your work, we will ask you to provide within our online application system some other important material:

Journalistic autobiography: Tell us how you became a journalist, what keeps you motivated and what you’d like to accomplish in the future. What intellectual and social values shape your journalism? What life experiences have contributed to your journalism? Give an example of a time when you’ve shown leadership and an example of your ability to work well with others. Word limit: 1,250.

Tip: The strongest candidates have put time and thought into preparing their applications — allow yourself enough time to make your best impression. Our application process is straightforward, but lengthy.

Journalism Challenge: We will ask you to identify a challenge facing journalism, explain why you believe it is important and why you want to explore and test ideas for responding to the challenge. We don’t expect you to already have the answers or solutions — that’s what you’ll pursue during your fellowship!  But we want to know how you would plan to approach exploring your challenge and what you would hope to have accomplished by the end of your fellowship year.

Tip: There is no single formula for identifying a journalism challenge that will assure you are selected for a JSK Fellowship. The best advice we can give you is this: Identify a challenge that you are passionate about pursuing and that is important to journalism.

Recommendation letters: You’ll need three letters from people who know you and your work and can address your ability to pursue your Journalism Challenge. They will submit their letters directly to our online application system. (You’ll be responsible for providing their contact information in your online application.)
