Biostatistics Division
Biostatistics is the application of the science of statistics to a wide range of problems in biology and medicine. The Division of Biostatistics is part of the Department of Health Research and Policy, and it is physically located on the Stanford School of Medicine campus. Its primary activities include:
- Developing statistical methods to analyze public health problems and to advance biomedical research.
- Providing biostatistics expertise to researchers for health-related study design and analysis.
- Advancing knowledge in biostatistics and health through educational programs for students and applied researchers.
Division Strengths
Stanford Biostatistics is a leader in the development of standards for high-throughput processing and analysis of data from the human genome and proteome, as well as developing more efficient methodologies for running clinical trials. Our students and scholars benefit from interdisciplinary collaborations with the shared faculty of Stanford's #1 ranked graduate programs in many fields — statistics, computer science, biological sciences, medicine, genetics, genomics and bioinformatics.
Degree Programs
The Division does not offer a degree program in biostatistics, but does offer specialized training in a wide array of biostatistics tools and techniques. Students interested in this specialty are encouraged to pursue a MS or PhD within the Department of Statistics in the School of Humanities and Sciences. Biostatistics has also launched a new Biostatistics PhD Training Program in Personalized Medicine, in partnership with Statistics.
