Passing of Hank Riggs

It is with great sadness to report the passing of MS&E Emeritus faculty member Hank Riggs on June 10th. Hank was the Thomas Ford Professor of Engineering Management in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management from 1974 to 1988, serving as Chair from 1978 to 1983. His research and teaching focused on the area of Industrial Accounting. For his teaching contributions, he was awarded the Tau Beta Pi Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Engineering Teaching in 1979, and in 1980 he received Stanford's highest award for excellence in teaching: the Walter J. Gores Faculty Achievement Award. In 1983, he was named Vice President for Development at Stanford and he then successfully led the Stanford Centennial Campaign, the first billion dollar academic fund-raising effort. He went on to serve as President of Harvey Mudd College and and then as President of the Keck Graduate Institute, before returning to Stanford. Hank taught an accounting module within MS&E’s American Electronics Association/Stanford Executive Institute executive education program for many years that consistently received outstanding reviews from the participants.
