Interdepartmental Graduate Program
Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (SCBRM)
Our program seeks doctoral students interested in the intersection of basic and clinical science with a specific emphasis on Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. Typically, this intersection is referred to as “Translational Science” or “Translational Medicine.” This program is one of the first in the nation and abroad to specifically offer doctoral degrees in this area of intense interest.
Traditionally, doctoral programs in biomedical sciences across the USA have focused on basic sciences with little interaction with clinical aspects or clinical studies. This traditional educational formula was based on the concept that clinically-relevant discoveries will arise via basic science, that the human organism is of such complexity that model systems are preferable, and that there will be a growing need for scientists with basic science training in systems such as bacteria, yeast, flies, worms, frogs and mice.
Graduates from our doctoral program will have received exceptional didactic education and research experience and be positioned to develop successful translational careers in SCBRM, in line with their passion to improve human health via applications of their knowledge to human health.
