Flickr has an open Application Programming Interface (API for short).
This means that anyone can write their own program to present public Flickr data (like photos, video, tags, profiles or groups) in new and different ways. There's a long list of API methods available to you to work with, and we love it when this happens, so... go forth and play! Featured Third Party Flickr Apps
fd's Flickr Toys fd (aka John Watson) is the epitome of the Flickr API hacker. He's made more bits and pieces than we can poke sticks at, and all of them are either fun toys for playing with photos or extremely useful tools that we haven't had time to build yet. Go, fd!
Trip Planner Trip Planner is a website that lets you build a travel itinerary with your hotel, nearby restaurants, attractions, maps, driving directions and more! When you return home, create a photo set of your trip on Flickr then show them off as part of your trip plan.
retrievr A lovely experiment, retrievr lets you search and explore in a selection of Flickr images by drawing a rough sketch and then seeing which of our interesting photos come up as a match. Beware! You will spend hours poring over the stunning (and sometimes unexpected) results.

You can see, for example, flowers or sunsets located on the map, zoom into particular states to see their most recent photos, or see the map of photos from a road trip. The Mappr team has created a group on Flickr too.
Flickr Color Picker by JBum Using images from the Color Fields group on Flickr, JBum has created a beautiful and efficient Experimental Color Picker. Just click on a color, use the slider to adjust lightness and darkness, and it will show you photos with that color.
