Event Details

The Stanford Open Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Stanford Golf Course Men’s Section, is the only tournament of the year open to all members of the Stanford community: men and women members, faculty/staff, students, alumni, and spouses. Compete as individuals for low gross and/or as 2-person teams for low net honors in this popular Spring event. The field is limited to the first 108 paid entrants. The event is a morning shotgun, starting at 8 am. Check-in at the Coupa Cafe restaurant at the Golf Course begins at 6:45 am.

Entry Fees include greens fee, bucket of range balls, contribution toward prizes, and a post-round lunch. Faculty/Staff $130; Alumnus/Alumna $130; Regular (dues-paying) Member (including juniors) $50; Golf Staff $50; Student $50; Spouse of a student $50; a non-member spouse of a faculty/staff person, regular member, or alumna/alumnus $130. Prizes will be awarded for approximately 1/3 of the field. Cart fee is NOT included and must be paid for on the day of the event. Teams are encouraged to sign up together. Individual entries will be paired to form two-person teams.

Film screening of “Ararat” directed by Atom Egoyan. Introduced by Sabrina Papazian, PhD Candidate, Anthropology.

“Ararat” is a 2002 Franco-Canadian drama historical film written and directed by Atom Egoyan and starring Charles Aznavour, Christopher Plummer, David Alpay, Arsinée Khanjian, Eric Bogosian, Bruce Greenwood and Elias Koteas. It is based loosely on the defense of Van in 1915 during the Armenian Genocide, an event that is disputed to this day by the Government of Turkey. In addition to exploring the human impact of that specific historical event, the film also examines the nature of truth and its representation through art.

Ararat depicts the efforts of an Armenian director, Edward Saroyan, to make a Hollywood-style film about the Armenian genocide, from the fictionalised point of view of a genuine historical figure, Arshile Gorky. The name of Aznavour’s character is a modified version of his character’s real name in the classic French film Shoot the Piano Player.

As filming progresses, various characters involved with it encounter the ethical problems that arise when adaptating contentious subjects into movies; for example, Ali is a Turkish-Canadian actor who becomes uncomfortable with playing the role of an evil Turkish military officer. There are also a number of secondary plots that relate to the genocide. One involves the relationship between Ani, an art historian who is an expert on Gorky and an adviser on Saroyan’s film, and her son Raffi. Another features Raffi and a Canadian customs official, David, whose son is having a homosexual relationship with Ali, the actor in Saroyan’s film. David stops Raffi at the airport, suspecting him of carrying drugs into Canada, disguised as film canisters.

The film also features roughly shot documentary camcorder footage of Lake Van and real ruined Armenian churches in the deserted city of Ani, near Mount Ararat.

Event Details

In his lecture, Professor Ronald Suny will explore the question “why genocide” and explains the elements that led the Young Turks to carry out the systematic deportation and massacre of hundreds of thousands of their Armenian and Assyrian subjects.

Suny is professor emeritus of political science and history at the University of Chicago. The grandson of the composer and ethnomusicologist Grikor Mirzoyan Suni and a graduate of Swarthmore College and Columbia University, he taught at Oberlin College (1968–1981), as visiting professor of history at the University of California, Irvine (1987), and Stanford University (1995–1996). He was the first holder of the Alex Manoogian Chair in Modern Armenian History at the University of Michigan (1981–1995), where he founded and directed the Armenian Studies Program.

Professor Suny has served as chairman of the Society for Armenian Studies and on the editorial boards of Slavic Review, International Labor and Working-Class History, International Journal of Middle East Studies, The Armenian Review, Journal of the Society for Armenian Studies, and Armenian Forum, and is a contributing editor to Armenian International Magazine. He has appeared numerous times on the McNeil-Lehrer News Hour, CBS Evening News, CNN, and National Public Radio, and has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, The Nation, New Left Review, Dissent, and other newspapers and journals.
