The Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound is open to the public Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm. The Archive provides a number of core services to aid patrons with their research including state-of-the art listening facilities, a large reading room for both individual and group study, duplication services, and reference assistance.  Additionally, tours of the Archive can be arranged for interested groups or individuals, notably library and archive students or music majors.  

The Archive's materials are for on-site use only. It is advised that visitors contact the Archive in advance so that required materials can be prepared. In broad terms, the Archive holds two categories of materials, commercial recordings; primarily consisting of 78rpm and LP discs; and unique collections, comprised of privately recorded material, radio broadcasts, and other rare or one-off recordings. The Archive's unique collections are housed at Stanford Auxiliary Library, a state-of-the-art facility specifically designed for long-term preservation of library and archive materials. These materials must therefore be prepared and transported to the Archive, taking up to 3 business days to arrive. Advanced notice for unique collection items is therefore essential.
