Stanford R&DE is deeply committed to providing the best possible experience to students and the Stanford community through the continued maintenance, improvement and renewal of our facilities, balanced by responsible financial stewardship. In our efforts to maintain our facilities at standards representative of the quality of Stanford, we employ sustainable systems and practices such as low-flow plumbing, sustainable food purchasing, and composting and recycling. We focus on features that promote safety, while promoting wellness and excellent customer service.
The following list highlights some of the many capital projects R&DE is currently pursuing or has recently completed.
R&DE Capital Projects
New Construction
- The New Residences at Lagunita Court - The New Residences at Lagunita Court will be two new undergraduate residences in the Lagunita Court complex. Housing approximately 218, the four-class residences will feature singles, doubles, and two-room doubles. Completion is scheduled for Spring, 2016.
- Manzanita Humanities Theme Residence - The newest undergraduate residence on campus will open Autumn 2015, and house approximately 550 students in a mix of singles, two-room doubles, doubles, and three-room quads.
- Café at SLAC – Opening in Autumn, 2015, the café at SLAC is a state-of-the-art facility with a large outdoor seating area, and is the only Stanford food-service facility serving the SLAC campus.
- Kennedy Graduate Residences – Opened in Autumn 2014, the Kennedy Graduate Residences located in the heart of Escondido Village consist of four new four-story buildings of studios, junior studios with shared kitchens, and two bedroom apartments.
- Arrillaga Family Dining Commons – The 26,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art dining facility is the first dining hall to be built on campus in almost 20 years. Opened in 2011, the facility features a teaching kitchen, performance bar and chef’s balcony.
Major Renovations
- Grove House – Five undergraduate row houses, including Grove House, received renovations to kitchens and all bathrooms, new plumbing and fixtures, new doors and windows, and upgraded electrical systems. Landscape improvements included new plantings and patios, and updated bike parking.
- McFarland House – In Escondido Village, McFarland House’s 63 apartments were converted from one-bedroom units to two-bedroom efficiency apartments, each providing two single students with a private bedroom and shared kitchen and bath.
- Resident Fellow Apartment – Resident fellow apartments at undergraduate residence halls, such as Stern, Larkin and Florence Moore Hall, and row houses such as Muwekma-Tah-Ruk, were remodeled, updated and enhanced.
- Rains House – Renovations to Rains House began in Summer, 2015, and will continue each summer over the next four years.
- Ricker Dining Hall – Ricker Hall received a seismic retrofit, as well as a completely redesigned kitchen, dining, servery and study area. Sustainability features included high efficiency kitchen appliances, bamboo veneers, and counter tops made of recycled materials.
- Florence Moore Dining Hall – The 10,324-square-foot dining hall received a renovation to increase the servery by 2,000 square feet and open the kitchens for exhibition-style cooking with free-hanging exhaust hoods. Daily meal service has increased by more than 30%.
- Forbes Family Café – Opened in early 2015, Forbes Family Café is a complete renovation of an existing food service location in the Huang Engineering Building Commons. The café consists of a self-serve cold salad bar and self-serve hot bar, as well as a prep kitchen and drink station.
- Fraiche – Located in Union Square at Tresidder, Fraiche doubled its size by expanding into the adjacent food service space and completely renovating the location to serve its fresh and frozen yogurts and other items.
