For Life And Beyond

As a Stanford employee, you are automatically enrolled in our Basic Life and Business Travel Accident insurance programs. Supplemental Life Insurance as well as Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance are also available. The Basic Life, Supplemental Life, and AD&D programs are provided through Prudential Insurance Company.

All Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance benefits are based on your salary as of September 1. Salaries are frozen for benefits purposes on September 1 each year just preceding Open Enrollment, and Life and AD&D insurance for the following calendar year is based on that salary, even if your salary changes during the year. Premium payments and benefit payouts are also based on the September 1 frozen salary. Each year, your salary is updated with the September 1 salary and used for the following calendar year. For employees hired after September 1, their salary is frozen for benefits purposes on their date of hire and that amount is used for the remainder of the year of hire and the entire following year.

Basic Life Insurance

You automatically receive coverage equal to your salary, up to a $50,000 maximum.

Supplemental Life Insurance

You may purchase Supplemental Life Insurance from one to eight times your salary, up to a $1.5 million maximum. If you purchase coverage levels that are more than three times your salary, or if you did not enroll when you were first eligible, you must complete Evidence Of Insurability (proof of good health) questions. You do this when you make your election online.

Supplemental Dependent Life Insurance

You may purchase coverage for your spouse or registered domestic partner up to a maximum of 50% of your combined Basic and Supplemental coverage, or $250,000, whichever is less. Coverage over $25,000 requires Evidence Of Insurability.

You can also select coverage of $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000 for your child(ren) as long as you have at least twice as much coverage for yourself.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance

AD&D insurance provides you and your family with protection against accidental death or loss of limb or body function. It does not pay a benefit for a death arising from illness or natural causes. You may purchase AD&D insurance from one to eight times your salary, up to a $1.5 million maximum for you and/or you and your children. Coverage is also available for your spouse or registered domestic partner.

Business Travel Accident Insurance

Stanford's Business Travel Accident Insurance plan pays a benefit if you are accidentally injured or die during an official university business trip.   • Name of Traveler
  • Occupation
  • Department
  • Dates Traveling, and
  • Country Traveling To.

Workers' Compensation

Worker's Compensation provides benefits for work-related illness or injury. Stanford continues to pay your academic base salary for the first five working days after a work-related accident, and then Workers' Compensation payment starts. For more information, go to the Risk Management Website.
