Care and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Cancers

Treatment Options

The Stanford Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer Program offers extensive treatment expertise to patients with all forms of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. Specialists from a broad range of disciplines participate in a multi-specialty approach to the care of patients. The Stanford Cancer Center's GI Cancer Tumor Board and multi-specialty Liver Tumor Board provide a thorough and collaborative plan for each patient.

GI Cancer Program doctors are leaders in their subspecialty fields and have access to the most advanced technologies and therapies available, including:

3-D conformal radiation therapy

A radiology technique where the beams of radiation used in treatment are shaped to match the tumor and uses targeting information to focus precisely on the tumor.

Intensity modulated radiation therapy

An advanced type of radiation technology that manipulates beams of radiation to conform to the shape of a tumor.

Stereoactive ablative body radiotherapy (SABR)

A treatment using sophisticated computerized imaging to precisely target a narrow X-ray beam.

Targeted therapies

Targeted therapies can target cancerous cells without affecting healthy tissue, unlike radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

Virtual endoscopy

Virtual endoscopy (including virtual colonoscopy and virtual bronchoscopy) allows doctors to explore internal structures in non-invasive ways using advanced imaging technology and computer algorithms.
