Welcome to the M&CS
Home Page
Mathematical and Computational Science is an interdepartmental undergraduate program designed for students interested in applying mathematical ideas and analysis to problems in the biological, computational, financial or management sciences.
For more information, please see our introduction
to M&CS.
2014-15 M&CS program information can be found through the Stanford

Announcements:
- What our M&CS webpage was missing: Student Awards!
Take a look at our page dedicated to MCS students who earned awards
in the past few years.

Course Scheduling Information:
- ATTN: STATS 200 will be offered both autumn and winter 2015-16.
If you still need to take STATS 116 and 200 next year for degree
requirements, please make that a priority.
- STATS 200: Introduction to Statistical Inference
Modern statistical concepts and procedures derived from a mathematical framework. Statistical inference, decision theory; point and interval estimation, tests of hypotheses; Neyman-Pearson theory. Bayesian analysis; maximum likelihood, large sample theory.
- Statistics Track for M&CS students
Students in the M&CS program can now pursue a Statistics
Track, aimed at those wishing to pursue statistical interests in
industry or academia. Beyond the basic M&CS curriculum, the track
requires three statistics electives at the MS level, as well as
an advanced course in Computer Science and in MS&E. (See the program
details below.) Stat Track students advancing to the statistic
coterminal program will then be able venture further into the MS and
Phd course lists.
M&CS Statistics track (total units 85)
Take the same MATH, CS, and MS&E courses as in the Standard Program.
- Add STATS 217 to required STAT courses.
- Add an advanced MS&E class on stochastic applications such as MS&E 220 or MS&E 223.
- Add an advanced CS such as CS246 (mining huge data sets).
- Three electives from MS level STATS classes. Recommended classes include:
- STATS 202
- STATS 206
- STATS 207
- STATS 208
- STATS 216
- STATS 219
- STATS 270
Past Announcements:
- Congratulations to our MCS majors who won the Undergraduate Division of
the Diamond Dollars Case Competition held during the SABR Analytics
Conference in March 2015.
- We had a terrific visit from Ya Xu (LinkedIn) on April 8.
Her
presentation on A/B Testing, which is a very worthwhile topic to our MCS
students. We very much appreciate her time and support to our program.
- MCS would like to give a BIG 'thank you' to our guest speaker, Jan. 27, Trevor Shaddox of the UCLA Biomathematics department (MSTP). Trevor graduated from Stanford with a B.S. in
M&CS in 2009.
- Thank you to Amazon's A9 for their visit and the talks they gave to
M&CS students.
We'd love to hear from M&CS majors about any networking ideas/suggestions for future
visits/meet-ups, please send me an
email! M&CS
