Release: 11/19/2014

Stanford junior Vivian Kong reached the finals at the Tournoi International tournament in Xuzhou, China, last week.

Kong, a native of Hong Kong majoring in international relations, finished in sixth place at the senior epée event, competing against fencers far older than she. Kong was between eight and 14 years younger than each of the top-four finishers, and she was the youngest top-10 finisher at the event.

Kong gained 14 international points for her performance, which doesn't even match the best result of her young career. Kong has also earned a bronze medal at the Coupe du Monde "Sparkassen-Weltcup" in Leipzig, Germany, to gain 20 international points.

Stanford fencing's season gets underway on Jan. 17 at the Western Invitational in Colorado Spring, Colo.
