Swearing-in ceremonyU.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) welcomed 24 refugees from 10 countries as they were sworn in as new U.S. citizens on June 20 at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, TX. World Refugee Day is observed on June 20 each year, and was established in 2001, the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.

For the Sixth year in a row, the Department of Homeland Security has earned top scores on the Small Business Administration’s Annual Small Business Procurement Scorecard.  The DHS Small Business Program continues to be one of the Department’s flagship procurement initiatives. I am proud of our track record, and this year we did even better with an “A+,” the highest possible score. The Department is the only agency to receive a grade of “A” six years in a row, and is the largest Federal agency to ever receive a score of “A+.”

Today’s terrorist attacks in France, Tunisia and Kuwait are a reminder of the evolving global terrorist threats. We stand in support of the people of those countries and mourn the loss of those killed.

America needs a strong cyber workforce to keep up with evolving technology and increasing cybersecurity risks.  To help meet this need, DHS has expanded access to the Federal Virtual Training Environment (FedVTE) – an online training center featuring a wide range of cybersecurity courses – to state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) government employees across the country.

ICE Director Saldaña and I understand the sensitive and unique nature of detaining families, and we are committed to continually evaluating it.  We have concluded that we must make substantial changes to our detention practices when it comes to families.
