I chose Stanford OHS for the opportunity to be in a virtual classroom environment with some of the greatest minds and teachers in the world. After attending OHS for a year, I can say that those expectations have been surpassed! Before OHS, I was home schooled for the majority of my life where I participated in EPGY and Johns Hopkins gifted youth courses. However, I also went to a public school for the 4th and 5th grades so I have experienced how “live” classrooms or “brick and mortar” schools work. What attracted me to an online learning environment was that it was a happy medium to home schooling and a brick and mortar school. I could still have the relatively flexible schedule while being able to be in a social community where I could participate in activities such as Student Government and Clubs. During my first year I was a part time student because I wanted to see if this kind of learning was the right fit for me. Now, I am a full time student at the OHS.
When I first came to OHS, one of the things that impressed me was the "live" online classroom experience. Instead of the teacher just presenting a lecture to the students using PowerPoint, the students were actively discussing, analyzing and even debating the material. As an example, in my Rebellions and Revolutions class, we were encouraged to express our opinions about the material during the class using the chat and microphone. This discussion-based learning style was effective because I could easily recall material since one of my classmates had made an interesting point about it during class. It was an excellent way for me to learn. As far as actual academic work, OHS's coursework can be extremely rigorous at times. However, this challenging experience at Stanford OHS has prepared me to believe that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to achieving.
The strong sense of community at OHS was a pleasant surprise. I've been able to establish friendships around the world through online tools such as Skype, Facebook, and other activities at OHS such as clubs. As the Class President in the Student Government over the past couple years, I organized movie nights, Skype group sessions, and other cool events to help students get to know each other. When everyone is stressing because of finals week, it is good to know that you'Re not alone after jumping into a Google hangout with your friends. This year, I started the OHS Entrepreneur Club along with a fellow student from China where students are able to come together and listen to special guest speakers and CEO founders to learn about their entrepreneurial adventures. There are a multitude of clubs at OHS, which present a unique opportunity to connect other students with similar interests regardless of where they live. There are also many regional meet-ups that are held throughout the year where students come together, socialize, and have fun. Pool parties, field trips, science competitions, etc are ways that students can connect. Furthermore, OHS has two primary social interactions on the Stanford campus. These are Graduation Weekend and Summer Session. At these events, I was able to meet many of my online friends and teachers. It was an incredible feeling because you feel like you know so much about them even though it is the first time that you have met in person. These events were also great opportunities to reconnect with friends I've known for almost two years now. OHS is a great way to connect with people from around the world and form lasting friendships in the process.
OHS has helped me develop academically because I enjoy my professors and the class discussions; I feel that I am truly learning a lot. I also can’t wait to take ALL the core classes because of their reputation of being awesome! With insightful teachers and interesting classes, my goal of earning a quality education is definitely being realized. Secondly, the flexibility of online classes has given me freedom to still attend classes while on the road traveling or at a debate tournament. The faculty and administration try to be accommodating and flexible in allowing students the opportunity to pursue special interests outside of the classroom. I appreciate their understanding that learning is not just gained in the classroom. They encourage outside activities that enhance the students in becoming well-rounded. Thirdly, OHS has helped me form several friendships with students from around the globe. I think this array of students with different cultures adds a depth and richness to all of our learning. I also like being able to say that I have friends throughout the world!
