The Department of Homeland Security has developed a Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan to clearly define goals and metrics to track progress in increasing energy efficiency, reducing fleet petroleum consumption, conserving water, reducing waste, supporting sustainable communities and leveraging federal purchasing power to promote environmentally preferred products and technologies.
The Department’s strategy has three sustainability goals:
- Strategic Transformation toward sustainable business processes.
- Human Capital Investment to raise awareness of sustainable practices and how employees can support the Department's missions.
- Leadership in Sustainable Law Enforcement for the federal government.

DHS is using the January 2014 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Scorecard on Sustainability/Energy as a benchmark to identify and track the best opportunities to reduce pollution, improve efficiency and cut costs.
