Since 1967, Mark di Suvero has utilized industrial tools, including hammers, wire brushes and welders, to create artworks. In his use of I-beams and steel plates, di Suvero captures a side of the modern industrial age that can be both rugged and elegant. Miwok contains qualities that seem more figurative than its steel materials would lead one to imagine. With elements similar to a head and shoulder blades, Miwok stands boldly, reaching upward and outward into space. The title relates to several Native American groups indigenous to Northern California collectively identified as Miwok. The name translates to mean “people” in their language.
