Stanford Live

In her newest exploration, Smith uses her signature form of documentary theater to investigate the school-to-prison pipeline—the cycle of suspension from school to incarceration that is prevalent among black, brown, Latino, and Native American youth in underserved communities.

At the heart of The Pipeline Project is the belief that all American children are “our” children. Now more than ever, we need a moral imagination to put a face on the challenges faced by minority youth and to animate policy conversations around this issue.

Smith is convening and collaborating with policy experts and individuals in communities across America to inform and motivate civic stakeholders around this important issue for our society’s future.

Anna Deavere Smith’s residency is copresented by Stanford Live, the Office for Religious Life, and the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.
