The Department of Art & Art History is pleased to present, Comma And..., the 2nd annual undergrad juried art exhibition at Stanford University, on view from September 28 – December 6, 2015. The exhibition, to be mounted in the Penny & Jim Coulter Art Gallery in the new McMurtry Building, includes 27 works from 20 students in 16 different majors throughout campus. With the title as a nod to the multiplicity of talents that Stanford students often possess, the works in the show seem to push and pull you through an introspective meditation on self identity.

Last winter quarter, undergraduate students in any discipline or major were invited to submit new work for the exhibition. The jury received over 130 entries submitted by 50 undergraduate students. After much discussion and deliberation, a jury made up of Terry Berlier (Artist and Associate Professor in Art Practice – Stanford University), Fabio Barry (Assistant Professor in Art History – Stanford University), Dena Beard (Executive Director - The Lab in SF), and Cathy Kimball (Executive Director - San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art), whittled down the selections and made their final recommendations. The student artists selected for Comma And…are: Amy Chen, Eric Eichelberger, Emily Giglio, Dan Guo, Gabriel Haro, Cody Laux, Soo Ji Lee, Victor Liu, Erica McCoy, Lauren Megaw, Maya Odei Maia Paroginog, Chase Porter, Mia Ritter-Whittle, Kevin Rouff ,Nicholas Salazar, Brian Tich, Cynthia Truong, Karen Wang, and Kevin Zhai.

Juror Dena Beard writes, “Comma And... does not attempt to showcase all types of art-making in the Stanford community. Instead, it looks for a few examples of thoughtfulness, curiosity, imagination, and above all, it shows the multifarious ways that artists can test the boundaries of the self. It was a pleasure to see how students negotiate those ever-changing limits.” Exhibition sites for the show include the Gunn Foyer and the Penny & Jim Coulter Art Gallery, both on the ground floor of the McMurtry Building.

About the McMurtry Building

Diller Scofidio + Renfro, along with the executive architect, Portland, OR-based Boora Architects, has designed not only a new home for the Department of Art & Art History but an interdisciplinary hub for the arts at Stanford that will foster interaction and collaboration among students and faculty, and support the integration of the arts into university life. Housed within 96,000 square feet and under one roof for the first time will be programs in art practice, design, art history, film and media studies, and documentary film and video. The building also includes art studios, media arts labs, screening spaces, film-editing rooms, exhibition space, and the Art and Architecture Library.
